For less than $100 you would have one of those.

thanks

hot dang Wayne - that is why I love you!!

I am going to Harbor Freight this weekend because I have a bunch of tires to change.

Anyone have any feedback on this setup?

Sorry I missed the Hammer Run this past weekend - first time in 6 or 7 years.

See you soon Wayne!

harbor freight tire changer and a nutty bike

I have the harbor freight setup.. I got each half for thirty something with coupons. It paid for itself the first time I used it, and several times over by now. I have used it to change both car and bike tires and it works fine. Some people recommend upgrading to the no-mar tire changing bar and adding some protection to the 3 points where it contacts the rim. (plastidip, garden hose, milk bottle pieces, etc have been suggested..) Not as fancy as the expensive brands but it works fine. Key to successful use is anchoring it solidly to either the ground or a pallet or something. I have broken several pallets while using it, so you probably want to reinforce it if you go that route. (or pick a really sturdy one..) Lube is another pro tip. Go down to advance auto parts or autozone and spend $10 on the gallon of lube. (soap works too but not as well) I bought some rim protectors off ebay and small tire irons to assist, too.

irons like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Three-15-inc...item5aeefdb8c1

rim protectors:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MOTORCYCLE-R...item5af5e2a9d4

if you spend 10x more, you can get something better, but i haven't seen anything even close to the price range I got this for. they also sell two types of balancers, the spinning it on a bearing kind, and the bubble level kind. they seem to work fine, too, and are also super cheap. (don't forget your coupons-- I can probably find a 25% off one if you need it..)

...and.. the bike link!

http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/mcy/4177931526.html

if you've driven one of these bikes, you know how nutty the torque is.. I grin just thinking about opening the throttle on that one with another 100hp!!

Based on this feedback, I just purchased the H-F set-up.

Jeff: You have been to my house. Feel free to come over and try this tire changer. - Bill

I just got that setup recently. I got a no-scuff tire tool to use instead of the standard included bar. I've mounted it to a frame of 1/2 inch plywood and 2x4s. Used it to unmount a tire but I was sent the wrong aspect ratio tire and only noticed after fighting to mount it for a while. The correct tire is arriving tomorrow. Hopefully it all goes well.

Tire changer information!! thanks

I don't want to hijack this thread and turn it in to a tire changing thread - but - this is great info as I usually wrestle the hell out of the tires and rims and with bloody knuckles and many curses, get the tire on.

Bill, I might be taking you up on the offer and I am going to order one of those changer as they are less than $100 and could be shared easily with others in the area.

I really like the no scuff tool - pretty cool.

Thank you - thank you - thank you for all of the great/useful info.

Jeff
