Trail Exploration Ride (June 16/07)

Temperatures were in the mid twenties Celsius in Eastern Newfoundland today, with light winds and blue skies. So myself and Doug and Lorenzo gased up our DRZs (Two blue ones and a green one) and rode the CBS Highway to Holyrood, and then rode the old branch-line railbed trail from Holyrood to Cupids.

When we arrived in the historic Cupids/Brigus area, we explored most of the trails on the headland between the two communities, while looking for the trail to the Brigus Head lighthouse. We did eventually find the trail, and with some good information from a friendly local on a quad, we learned that the trail is free to travel when the cows are in the barn, but when the gate's closed and the cattle are out to pasture, it's off limits. This meant we'd have to come back and try another day, since a large group of bovines were happily eating their lunch in the pasture.

After riding up and down the hills of the Burnt Point headland for awhile, and looking out in awe at the beautiful coastal views from the top of the cliff, we blasted down to Clarke's Beach to refuel. Then we took a run out along the Port De Grave Peninsula, and grabbed Doug and Lorenzo another lighthouse photo by visiting the Green Point lighthouse, just for the burn.

Total distance for the day, of mixed on road and off road exploration, was around 240 kms, door to door from my place in the East End of St. John's, and back.
