Race results

Race results can be viewed here: http://www.northwest200.org/Race_results_2007.aspx.
After an awesome day of racing we all retired to our various pubs and then off to a late bed.
Back on the road again we enjoyed the local scenery and our leaders took us on another interesting route complete with castles (or remnants thereof) along the way and more high speed blasts through the gorgeous scenery and on into and thru Belfast. It was on this stretch that my pillion gained an appreciation for aerodynamics as she noticed how her helmet began to lift at speeds over 100 mph. Leaning into me helped some as we hit 115 mph and I was thankful for the Sprint’s fairing and windshield as I watched the rainsuits of the others without fairings flailing in the wind like possessed scarecrows. It was on this stretch where Billy and Bobby lost appreciation for the underpowered and naked Scramblers.
The next day Billy and Bobby returned their lightweight but underpowered Scramblers for a silver 06’ V-twin 1000 Aprilia Tuono for Bobby and a Roulette green 07’ Triumph 1050 Speed Triple for Billy.

Back on the road

We rode motorcycles for 10 days all over the country which is much smaller than Texas. In fact it appeared to not be much more than 100 miles from north to south tip. While I mostly rode the Sprint ST I also got a chance to ride (and race!) on Bobby’s Tuono for about 50 miles as Bobby, Billy and I switched bikes to experience the different characteristics of the Speed Triple, Tuono and Sprint.

On one nice stretch of highway as Billy on my Sprint pulled up alongside me I pegged the Tuono in third gear and the two of us disappeared from the group over a gently curving hill on one of the beautiful vacant highways. Here's a shot of Billy impersonating a cop in his new raincoat.

bike stuff

At around 130 mph it seemed liked the Tuono ran into a wall of air and could not keep up with the Sprint as Billy motored away from me on it. It seemed like the Sprint proved fastest possibly by virtue of its sleek fairing and seamless power but Hap theorized that perhaps I was not short-shifting the Tuono with its’ torquey V-twin powerband. While the Tuono had outrageous torque that would get the front wheel skipping off the ground during hard acceleration the Sprint is like being attached to a huge rubber band which seemed to exponentially increase your acceleration to ridiculous warp speed with absolutely no limits (other than our own) in sight. In fact when we returned the bikes to McCallen’s the head customer service rep told me that when he and Phillip went riding a few days before that he had gotten the Sprint up to a hair over 172 mph! Well obviously that 19 tooth countershaft sprocket was sure good for one thing, speed! “We can recall the top speed on the trip computer so that we can see how fast you go but only if it exceeds the speed I put on it” he told me. I told him there was no danger of me getting near his mark.

In general we flew like hooligans (perhaps not at all unusual there) all over the tiny country splitting traffic, white lining down the center lines alongside traffic at intersections or pretty much anywhere if the traffic speed was semi-slow, doing occasional wheelies everywhere with 100+ mph blasts on beautiful vacant stretches of scenic Irish highways. Fast riding is so common an occurrence there that the Plod as the cops are called will be using a bunch of new ASBO laws to fight speeding soon by confiscating bikers going at "certain speeds". Then you have to pay a fine to get them back. Here's a shot of our scoots parked at Carlingford Castle.

Greeeeeeeeeeeeen

Everything was SO green and beautiful it was like riding thru a picture postcard and every new turn revealed classic Irish scenery such as a gent wearing his tam and holding his shillelagh whilst his sheep dog controlled his herd of sheep in perfect time honored fashion.

Rope Bridge

We toured restaurants, pubs, ruins and castles, one very high rope bridge, (here's a shot of the trail to it) and several ancient monuments and structures of questionable purpose.

Scenery

We went thru towns with names like Dungannon, Craigavon, Kilkeel, Hilltown, Rathfriland, Carlingford, Portadown, Belfast, Newcastle, Antrim, Newry, Larne, Ballymena and the MourneMountains (which were quite beautiful in a stark sort of way.

Eek Weird stuff

One thing that struck us each night back at the youth hostel was the absence of any city lights whatsoever. It is dark around there at night! One night after Barbara and I got back from Port Rush pretty late we watched a kaleidoscope of swirling colors coming from inside a cloud a half mile west of the Girl Scout youth hostel. At first I thought it might have been one of those 4 light spotlights used to signal the opening of a new nightclub in the U.S. but there were about 20 spots of blue and pink lights in three neatly organized rings coming from inside the cloud rather than being projected on it from outside and it was rotating and flying around. We watched it for about 20 or 30 minutes and I took three videos of it with my cameraphone so its pretty craptastic quality-wise, but you can see the swirling colors on your monitor a little if your room is totally dark. Too dark to post here even if you could post vids here? So here's a shot of our group in the pits at the race.

Restaurant adventures

The following day the group moved south 91 miles down to Banbridge and again Trevor and Arthur led our happy parade of riders down winding Irish highways.
Stopping to have a bite of lunch in a small town we had a few pints and some great Irish fare. We walked back outside and got on our bikes preparing to get back on the A1 as we struggled to don our riding gear once again. As Barb and I prepared to exit the parking lot I caught a glimpse of Rick and the Speedmaster falling over as he killed the engine trying to take off. A few of us rushed to his aid since only Trevor and Arthur had left (being the leaders they were) and helped him get the bike back up. Fortunately it was mostly his pride that was hurt although the big Triumph suffered a broken turn signal or two and a bent shifter.

Finally we arrived in Banbridge where most of the group stayed in two neighboring B&Bs near the Country Club

Fernhill cottage

although the three couples other than Andy and Judy (of which we were one) stayed across town in another B&B further out of town. All of the cottages were quite charming and there were many farms and B & Bs in this area as indeed all of Ireland seemed to have. Since tourism seems to be such a large part of the economy it was no wonder that everyone was (for the most part) extremely friendly.

Another oops

More pubs and restaurants were explored in and around Banbridge and some of the group splintered into smaller groups that went exploring to different surrounding scenic areas and castles for the first two days there. It was around this time that Dave and Jane’s big CB 1300 Honda understeered on a fairly tight wet low-speed turn resulting in them lowsiding onto a very tall patch of whatever type grass is in great abundance all over Ireland. Although Jane got a small bruise they fortunately only ended up sliding across the grass although the big Honda eventually slid onto pavement enough to do some minor scratching and break off the clutch level end. Fortunately neither passenger nor pillion sustained any real injuries and they rode home without any further problems.

The third day from the end several of us went to the Rebel frontier in Armagh and Omagh and saw memorials for the rebels.
