Omagh

We stopped at the Hogshead restaurant In Omagh which had some of the best food of the trip and left just as it started to rain again. It pretty much rained for the next couple of hours although we stayed pretty dry for the most part thanks to our raingear on the way to see the Beagham stone circles.

Getting wet and Losing stuff

The Stone circles were very interesting but as the light rain came down it finally started to seep into our gloves just as we were leaving. Leaving there and pressing on toward Cookstown we began to get a little cold. Finally Barb was so soaked she asked us to stop at the grocery store in Cookstown where we bought four pair of those yellow dish washing gloves which we put underneath or riding gloves. Although creepy feeling they kept our hands dry and slightly warmer than the wet alternative. Billy and Bobby stopped at a small town pub almost back in Banbridge and had a drink with a friendly matron whereupon Billy could not locate the key to the Speed Triple. After having all the locals search the pub for half an hour he found it in his vest pocket.

On the second to the last day Trevor and Arthur took Billy, Bobby and Barb and I on a tour along the coast to see the Megalithic Passage Tomb at Newgrange which was built about 3200 BC. Even though some of it was in the rain most of it was not and the vistas were incredible.

I noticed another castle section about a half mile away and snapped a shot of it as well.

Lunch

We then jumped on the bikes and then doubled back a short distance to the beautiful Carlington harbor with a very nice restaurant that was just opening for lunch. Having a pint and some awesome seafood chowder we swapped bikes and set off to explore the coast.

Stuff

There seems to be an understanding in Ireland that you alert your fellow bikers by light flashing or putting your hand on your head to alert them of an upcoming speed trap or cops and this technique saved us much grief a couple times. Riding along the coast we drove thru tunnels hewn out of the side of the mountains and came upon some small sections of stone wall that appeared to be sections of castle wall built right in to the side of the roadway. Of course the ubiquitous stone walls were always alongside us throughout most of our trip along the more elevated winding sections and that seems to be a given all over Ireland anywhere you don’t want people falling off a cliff.

More stuff

Reaching the Tomb at Newgrange we were disappointed to find out that due to an overabundance of bureaucracy the overly regimented tours were scheduled in just such a way as to insure we would not make it back to Lurgen anywhere near 4:00 PM which is when we were supposed to turn in our bikes at McCallens. So we hopped back on our bikes again and headed north back toward Lurgen. On the way we stopped at Trevor’s house and he showed us his collection of Hells angels pictures from all over the world. His house is full of hundreds of motorcycle models and pictures of all sorts. After a cup of tea and conversation with his delightful daughter we headed back to Lurgen to turn in our bikes.

The automated tour was fascinating and we all took lots of pictures of ourselves with the indoor waterfall and upstairs Gravity Bar which provided a clear 360 degree view of Dublin from 7 floors up.

Dublin Castle

After that the group disbanded and our small part of the group had lunch at an Italian restaurant where the employees were actually Italian and spoke no English. The service was poor and the heat stifling but I had the feeling it was about par for Ireland. Hap unfortunately had left his cell phone in the cab they had taken on the way but fortunately calling it resulted in an accommodating cabbie who eventually brought it back to him. Barb and I went to the Dublin castle

Gullivers travels meet ours

and doing some last minute shopping. We stopped at a nice pub where (like most pubs in Ireland) soccer (football) was playing on the many televisions. After getting drenched in yet another shower and perusing an Irish shopping mall we caught a cab who gave us a short tour of the buildings that were adorned with scenes from Gulliver’s Travels in celebration of the author’s residency there in Dublin.

Flying home

The next day, May the 19th, we all boarded our vans and drove to the airport in Belfast where we caught our plane home to the US. In Newark we bid our new friends goodbye and boarded the plane to Dallas. The trip home yielded an unusual feature I have never seen while on board a jet, namely a con-trail, which we flew alongside for an hour or more while I snapped many pictures of it. Eventually we landed in Dallas, caught a cab to our friend’s house where Barb’s truck was stored and drove home.

The End.
