Laugh ADVRider Email Accounts

If you are a member of ADVRider and have at least 100 posts to your name -- and you've survived -- you can have an @advrider.com email account! This thread will tell you what you need to know.

The first post is about The Rules. It's like this:

(1) The only email addresses given out will be of the format "username@advrider.com". The username will be the same as the one you use on the board. If your username is too long for the email system you'll get a shorter one, with an alias of the full name. Underscores will be used if there are spaces in your name.

(2) The accounts exist only by the good graces of Baldy. Either he (as the admin) or I (as the provider of the resource) can revoke the addresses for any reason. If you get yourself booted from ADVRider.com for misbehaving don't expect your email to last much longer.

(3) As these accounts are free-of-charge I can't give you any guarantees on how many years they'll remain active. Don't use your @advrider.com email for things that are scary-important. Keep in mind that while I'm still running email addresses that I started for folks nearly 8 years ago it doesn't mean that some random factor won't crop up that makes me unable to continue. All things in life are impermanent anyway.

(4) Standard 'safe and sane' computing applies: Thou Shalt Not Spam. Thou Shalt Use a Virus Checker. Thou Shalt Not Use Thine Account for blatantly illegal purposes. I can and will invoke rule #2 as needed if anybody becomes a problem.

(5) You'll get 50Mb of quota. That's a lot of email. Be good and clean up after yourself. If someone emails you a bunch of video files as attachments and suddenly you can't receive any more email it's your own damn fault.

(6) You'll get 6 months of data retention. Any mail that you've not downloaded to your own computer by then will be tossed automatically in the bit-bucket. Again, clean up after yourself if you want to keep your email inbox running smoothly.

(7) You're mostly on your own for tech support. While I can and will give assistance in how to start up and use the system I have a rather overzealous dayjob. It may be a day or four before I can get back to you. More if I'm out on a proper week-long ride. (The bike has needs, man.) I'd suggest that as people learn to use the system they help each other out, community-style.

If you have a problem you can email support (at) advrider (dot) com. This will get to both my ISP-running partner and myself. We'll get to it as soon as we can.

NOTE: This first 'rules' post may be edited over time as site requirements change.

How to request an account:

DO NOT post to this thread to request an account! That'll just clog this thread up. Doing so will get you publically berated and delay the creation of your new account (by a few weeks, or a month maybe. Depends on how onery I'm feelin').

Send a PM (private message) to me here on ADVRider. Simply say "I'd like an ADVRider email account". Make sure you have more than 100 posts to your name or your request will be dropped.

You will be assigned a random password that you should change the first time you log in.

NOTE: if your username is more than 10 characters, please let me know what 'short' name to use for your login. Your full ADVRider name will be on the email, but the login system requires 10 characters or less. If you don't include one I'll pick one for you.

Now, you can and should post 'how do I do this?' and other questions about the email service to this thread. Just not requests for an address.

How to use your account: WEBMAIL

This is the easy one. Simply go to the following URL:

http:/mail.advrider.com/webmail

Note: you can go to the root too, and it'll just redirect you. No worries.

--------
Help is always available with a 'help?' link on the bottom of each page.

The first time you log in it will run you through a config wizard. Feel free to edit anything you want... there's a ton of options! If you don't want to change anything, just hit the 'save' key.

If you want to change your config any time in the future, press the 'settings' icon:

You'll notice up in the upper left of the config page is a little icon of a user and a key: Press that and it'll take you to the password change tool. Please do this at least once. Remember to practice proper internet security, boys and girls (and Nachtflug): change your passwords now and then.

The rest of the email system is pretty much up to you. It behaves like most mail programs and there are Help links throughout.

How to use your account: POP3/IMAP4

If you want to use a normal email tool such as Pegasus, Netscape, Outlook Express or the many others out there, simply configure them as follows:

For POP3:

SMTP Server: mail.advrider.com
POP3 Server: mail.advrider.com

For IMAP4:

IMAP Server: mail.advrider.com

Simple, no? Be sure to set your reply-to address as "YourUsername@advrider.com". You can use your own SMTP outbound server if you wish; that's all up to you.

------

A note about send-security: The SMTP port uses what's known as "pop-before-smtp" security. To keep spammers from using my services as an open-relay you must first authenticate via POP before you can send mail.

In simpler terms: CHECK YOUR MAIL at least once before trying to send a message. Every time you check your mail you get a 10 minute window where the SMTP port will let you send.

If your email program comlains 'relaying denied' or a similar error, just check for new mail then try to send again.

-------

If you choose to "leave a copy of downloaded emails on the server" (an option in many mailers) please keep in mind that you have a 50mb quota.

Forwarding your ADVRIDER.COM email

Say you want the email alias (yourusername@advrider.com) but you don't actually want to use it? Instead you just want anything sent there forwarded over to your normal email box?

Can do.

Simply log into the Webmail system once (see the post two steps up in this thread). During the 'config wizard' you will see an entry that reads: Forward Mail To: .

Put your real email address in there and press Save at the bottom of the page. All done!

If you've already been using the webmail system, you can of course press the 'settings' icon to get back to the setup wizard:

It's not automatic... you have to *ask* for the address!

Be sure to read all my posts up above yours there... one of them includes 'how to request an address'. :)

here's one for you. I try to send from webmail and it reports:

Couldn't open SMTP server 127.0.0.1:25!

huh? is this my 127.0.0.1 or is it the server 127.0.0.1?

I assumed that logging into the webmail page would do the pop3 auth, no?

Dumb Question

Tug, Is the Email addresses on Advrider.com case sensative?
I sent a dummy to it and It appears lost in limbo. That was over an hour ago. So I tried to send another dumm with the case as sent to me and that appears to be lost as well. Neither has been bounced back to the address where I sent it frrom.
