A Senior Citizen Who Rocks

This is a ride report about a friend of mine named Keith Falkner. Keith is 65 years old, and has more passion and energy for adventure riding than most of us can hope to have at thirty or forty years old.

I met Mr. Falkner on a V-Strom forum, as we share the same type of bike. He had a great interest in the island of Newfoundland, and was planning to make the provincial capital of St. John's his turn around point, along his solo journey from Ontario and back.

Keith arrived safe and sound in Newfoundland, after an over-night crossing on the ferry from Nova Scotia. His heavily loaded DL650 V-Strom had brought him here, while humming along nicely without complaint. We met Keith near the ferry port of Argentia on June 30th, and gave him a guided tour of some of the Avalon Peninsula's best coastal roads. It was one of those rare days, on the very southern-most part of the island, when even the weather cooperated. We rode the Cape Shore Loop and the Irish Loop combined. A stop at the Cape St. Mary's lighthouse gained Keith a point in our lighthouse photo competition, and made him the first visitor to the province to get in our game. The day's ride racked up 550 kms on my V-Strom's odometer.

On the following day I spent the afternoon riding with Keith, and my friend Mike, to places of interest in the St. John's area.

Here's a map of our dayride route...

Some photos...

Doug, Quentin, Keith, and I, at the Cape St. Mary's lighthouse...

Mike and Keith on Signal Hill...

Keith on his beast of burden...

Quentin and Doug meeting Keith in person for the first time, at the town of Placentia Newfoundland...

Rugged cliffs along the Cape Shore...

On the wharf at Broad Cove...

The new and the old Cape Spear lighthouses...

Near report on us older guys whom still get out there and get it done. Heck I still have a year or so before I get to Keith's age. I just turned 64 last March.
Gads, He has a full blown cooler on the back of that bike.
Thanks for the great pictures of the area and Keith and company

Don't let Kaneman see the size of his cooler.

Great pix as always Geoff.

Yes. I was planning on being a senior citizen who rocks, myself in a few decades.

How old was Ted Simon when he got back from his last RTW trip? 72 I belive. Crashing in Africa and South America at that age, then getting up and continuing on.

Rock on old guys.

Guys like Keith are a great inspiration to me. I just turned 46, but if I have his kind of energy and passion for riding, in another twenty years, I'll be very happy.

And hey...

Age aside, Keith is just a hell of a nice guy.

I'll be doing just that, next week. It's about a 2500 km round trip from St. John's.

Just had a call from Keith Falkner...

He's back safely home with family in Toronto. He rode 1400 kms on the last day of travel! He also rode the Viking Trail up as far as the north boundary of Gros Morne National Park, and did the Port Au Port loop on his way to PAB, too.

He sounds even more full of joy than Keith usually does. Looks good on him, I say!

Bravo Keith!

Laugh Escapees...

We're Aussie Honda riders (62 & 56), looking to cross Canada E - W July 2009. Will we have any issues picking up a used V-Strom in NS? Can't find a Varadero, Africa Twin or Transalp...!
