This bill:
2) Declares that a vehicle owner has a fundamental right to access the information necessary to gain entry to and operate his or her motor vehicle in a timely, convenient, reliable, and affordable manner that does not compromise his or her safety or the security of the vehicle and to select the qualified service provider of his or her choice to assist in regaining access to the vehicle.
...
5) Requires every motor vehicle manufacturer to provide a means whereby the registered owner of that motor vehicle can access information that is necessary to permit the reproduction of a key or other device that will allow the owner to enter, start, and operate his or her vehicle.

The term "device" includes a series of steps or procedure.

A second guy call Max and said the price is correct. Why not go over to ST and see for yourself or call Max. I'm just trying to pass what I think is good info along. I have no skin in the game and have no need for a spare part.

No Marty..the price has really dropped since this whole antenna fiasco started...but why? The Euro is going up, up and the price should be increasing not decreasing for a product made in Europe.

It might be that the 247 part number isn't an active device.

It's because the 247 is just a bypass has no antenna.

I'd like to help you out...but I have no idea. Who knows, perhaps they will send one to every owner...might be cheaper than sending recovery trucks.

OK that is clear as mud...no antenna needed in our system? You are saying it is a 2008 version of a "hot wire"? [as in 'hot wiring an ignition']

Filled up with gas and the 07 GSA would not start. Looked at the dash and had a EWS errror.

The manual says it's about the security system.

Called a dealer and he said it was a EWS Ring failure and it had to come in to fix it. Also, at the same time to get software updated...

Any home fixes???

The $60 reduction in the price is a revealing indication of how big the problem is. The less money the dealer charges back on the warranty claim the less impact on BMW's warranty budget.

I went to my local dealer this morning to pick up a part. The head mechanic was on the phone and looking kinda flustered. When finished, I asked him what happened. Earlier in the day a loyal customer called with an EWS failure in western NC on his new K1200GT and wanted some advice. The mechanic explained the situation to him and offered to call the nearest dealer (Touring Sport BMW in Greenville, SC) to let them know that he would be coming in via roadside assistance. The mechanic was upset to learn that Touring Sport did not have any antenna rings in stock and said that, even if they did, they are too busy to fit this person into their schedule for at least several days. Maybe he can get the antenna ring replaced at the Knoxville, TN dealer.
