So, is there a TSB# or something? I'm sure my dealer will deny any of this exists, so it'd be cool to be armed with some information other than a VIN range.

Thanks!

I see why Hitler really did want a VFR.

When I worked in manufacturing it was all about ship date. If the product was not finished or even what the customer ordered was secondary to ship date. We had a field service department that would finish units in the field. Sent a lot of stuff out on trucks and the paint dried going down the highway.

No!! This is NOT a recall. It is a service bulletin. An EWS ring does not fall under the auspices of being a safety item, therefore, it is a service bulletin.

My wife's F800ST just died 2 days ago and we had to have it towed in. We thought it might be the EWS so we went through the whole process and have independantly verified through 2 differernt dealers that this is a Service Bulletin, NOT a recall. As it tunred out, the EWS ring was not at fault. It was a battery that died. The dealer is doing the EWS anyway.

The end result is the same, have your dealer swap out the EWS. Based on a lot of the responses here and in the other bazillion threads on this topic, I might add that a bit of sugar vs all the vinegar goes a long way to building a relationship with your deaer and getting things done. Remember, they are the service end, not the design, engineer, and build end.

Just my .02. Flame away on how the world should be perfect, blah, blah, blah.

Checked with my dealer and the service manager said he hadn't seen actual stuff from BMW yet but he knows it's coming and are already doing some bikes. If you're going to do it, call. I won't be able to get in until mid august. Haven't had any problems but if they're going to replace it and it's an improved version...why not? Might see if I can keep the old one as a spare just in case.

Amen.

I just dropped mine off for the ring. The service guys are none too happy about the .75hr warranty reimbursement vs. the 2hrs they say it's taking THEM to do the swap.

They're also no more sure than many of us that this fifth ring is going to be the be-all and end-all fix.

His comment: "Maybe if they'd just designed and built the thing right, in the first place."

BTW: he said that there wasn't a chance in hell that they'd either give me the original part back OR install regular fasteners (vs. security fasteners), but ... thanks for asking

Bringing the service manager a bottle of wine AND the replacement regular fasteners might do the trick - it's worked for some of us...

Got Spare? -247

I received my spare ring today -247 made in Belglum on the label. My bike is also on the Vin list so I will have to go get it done swometime I guess...it's a hassle to go to the dealer for me.

Sooo, my O5 GS VIN preceeds the first number...but last year, before I had heard about the dreaded EWS ring antenna, some jagoff tried to steal my bike while on tour in VA. Melted the wiring on the ignition assly and I actually had a legit EWS warning. Somehow I was able to jump start the bike and get home. Insurance paid for a whole new ignition assly (including new ring antenna). This occurred in Oct 07. I haven't checked the part number on the installed antenna, but bought a spare from Chicago BMW back in Feb...part ...207 unfortunately.

So what would you guys do? Keep things status quo w/the 207 as a spare? Buy a 247 for a spare?

I am curious how you jump started your bike since everything written so far says there is no way.

Hmmmm! Seems like my GS was made about 200 bikes before this problem started!
