Very strange that you have 3 EWS failures, while most have no problem at all. I've read other accounts here of multiple EWS failures.

Makes one wonder if there is a correlation between certain electronic add-on's/wiring modifications and EWS failures.

They haven't released the bypass procedure yet? That sounds like them. And dang, after one or two of you fellows have been up and at them with a letter too.

BMW will release the information when you are damn good and ready.

What is interesting is all 3 were on my wifes bike, we both have 07 Adventures and the VIN numbers are only 5 apart. Both built within a day or two? I have not had a failure, both bikes are outfitted the same, milage about 23000.

I just got "the call" from my dealer. I'm taking the GS in Friday to have the EWS Immobilizer replaced.

Be happy they called you, instead of you calling them ...from the road, at a dark stormy night

FYI
'07 GS.
Had the antenna ring and front brake lines done, including a throttle sync'
- for no charge.

Upon removing the front right tank cover when I got home, found the rubber grommet missing ( that is on the frame and side cover clips into ) and the fuel vent lines? seperator clip boken!
I loved the fact that BMW has this attitude to the re-calls and will continue to have them do this kind of work only, BUT, I will continue to do my own maintenance.

"Weathered one" had his 07 GSA (4 months old) fail at the rest area 40 miles east of Amarillo after leaving Dallas for Alaska. He had it towed (after calling all the involved towing decision making officials from BMW and Insurance companies, it ended up costing him more than $900 to get the bike taken to the Dallas dealer). They broke the only antenna they had in stock and it took them almost 5 days to get the bike going again.

I won't buy a new one until they give the owner the capability of disabling the EWS feature!! Their geeks programed it in - they can program it out - if the attornies will let them!! Looks like a left-over car ignition switch anyway!! Probably wasn't reliable in the cars either!

Just had the 247 ring installed on my 07 12GS along with the BMSK fuel mapping update. 33,000 miles on the bike without a problem, but had the upgrades anyway. Gotta say the fuel mapping upgrade is awesome. The 2 dips in the powerband at 4500 and 550 rpms are now gone. Acceleration is smooth as glass. Bike runs better than ever.

Mine just failed. Dreaded EWS on the computer.

Max himself of MaxBMW drove down to pick up the bike. Damned thing started when he tried it [figgers]. $90 to transport but the part will be replaced under the recall.

12K miles on it. No (zero) electronic add-ons to the bike. Halfway through the 12K service--did valves and oil yesterday. Just wouldn't start. Would start two hours later though.

(What's Max doing on a Saturday picking up crippled GSAs in the afternoon--doesn't he have better things to do?)

Dang. Ruined my ride tomorrow. Wife finally agreed to ride pillion after 2 years of me asking. Now she insists she can't trust me OR the BMW.

Talking Ews!

Took the "WRRT HOG" in to get an inspection today, its been leaking oil off the skid plate since the 600 mile service a month ago, I didn't know if it was something serious or just residual left over, didn't want to chance it.
Service writer says its also gonna get a new EWS antenna ring that just came out in July, not just an update on the computer, maybe this is old news here but it was new news to me, I was glad to hear they have a complete replacement now available. Like Forrest says, "One less thing to worry about".

I'm getting what feels like a surge at 4250rpm in 6th. Does this sound like what you were experiencing before the update?

Well, you get better service from them than me. I bought my new 2008 GS from Max(NY).
As soon as I heard about the recall I called Max's and they would not give me an appt for 3-4 weeks.
Well guess what, it died 2 weeks before my appointment.
Roadside was completely useless and didnt help me. So I called Max and he said, "nothing I can do for you." Now granted I was a few hours away from Max, but maybe they could have given me a discount on the tow service since they have their own trucks.
The reaction wasnt what really frosted me.
What bothered me was that I bought my GS brand new from Max (my 2nd new bike from hem in 3 yrs) and they couldnt fit it in their schedule to perform the recall sooner than 3-4 weeks.
They should have taken me in right away given the problem of the EWS.
I am supposed to be a valued customer. Not only did they make me wait that long, none of my voicemails or emails were responded to. It took Ben Stratton to get the service dept to reply to me.
I have always been a fan of Max's. I always praise them to my friends and club members. But lately they have disappointd me on basic communications.
Oh well, enough whining.
