This thread has been inactive for a long time, which is great. I didn't read everything, but it seems that all ring failures had been on new bikes. I have a 2007 with "bad" part#. If the ring has survived until today, should I be concerned or can I assume that I got a quality part?

Did you buy the bike new?

Are you certain it was not replaced when at the dealer for other service?

I personally would not trust it if it is the original one.

I bought the bike this fall. On advice of JVB I checked the part number, so I know it hasn't been replaced.

Not certain, but since it is a recall thing instead of a warranty thing I think they will still replace it.

I would take it to a good, local, BMW dealer......buy some service, or tires etc....and while it is there have them run the VIN to check if it has had all the TSBs performed.

That is what I would do.

Mine failed on my '07 in '07. A new one was robbed off a new bike (as they had none in stock) by the great guys at Salt Lake BMW. When I got back to PA my dealer, Hermy's BMW, replaced it with a new part before my next trip....I didn't even ask! I also bought an extra...I think $38....and carry it with me. No problems since.

You were right. I called a local dealer, they said that the ring is a recall item, the'll fix it for free.

No power

I have broused the multiple comments about ring issues of which I experienced on my previous 1200 GS adventure and had factory recall fixed on my F8gs. However, todays problem is different in that when I turned the key on my f8gs (it has 29K maintenace failure free miles) I got nothing. Nothing in the instrument panel, no lights, no horn, nothing. One of my more knowledgable friends gave it a look and gave the handle bars a few lock to lock pushes and miracle; all is well. The ignition came on, instrument panel responded as normal and engine started like always. Now I have a concern with why and when will it happen again. Stuff don't fix itself normally. Any suggestions on cause or potential fixes would be appreciated.

Id say you have a loose / chaffed wire in the harness form the ignition switch. Best track that down pronto before it leaves you stranded.

Genka,

Recently, a friend who tows for a local repair shop had a call for a BMW bike that wouldn't start. He knew I might be able to troubleshoot it so he asked me to look at it. It was a brand new, 2007 F800S that was purchased in Nov of 2010. The owner had only put the first 236 miles on it over a warm weekend (3/9/2011). When it quit on him it was showing "EWS" on the LCD display so I knew what the problem was before it got to my house. When it got to my house, I checked the Antenna Ring part number and it was a #247. Then I looked at the fasteners holding the ignition switch and they were socket head cap screws, so I knew it had been replaced. So I ordered a new antenna ring from Max BMW and installed it, problem solved. I called Max back, and told them what happened and they said they would cover it under warranty and send me a replacement antenna. I'm telling you all of this because I just wanted to let you know that the #247 antenna rings are not immune to failure. This bike had obviously had it replaced as part of the recall, but was never ridden until the new owner got it out this spring. I can't believe the original replacement lasted only a short time.

Well, anything can fail, but I wanted to get rid of the part with unusually high failure rate. I'm glad that BMW covered it even after warranty expiration.

EWS failure this weekend 110 miles from home. 07 gs 22k, orig. owner.

Ring was replaced lil over a year ago but not with the 247 module. Now I'm
1) trusting BMW for solving the problem.
2) not doing my homework and carrying a spare ring,
right beside the spare final drive and fuel bypass wiring.

I have to laugh, mins before I stopped for lunch I thought I love this bike, I
dont care if they are prone to breaking down.

Just amazing ! What if another brand was having all these troubles ? We'd be making fun of them big time !!!

Ews

I had my EWS replaced. Been OK so far and not sure, but think it was the new part #.

Do you know the part number for the new one?

Seems I heard there was a hard wiring work around in emergency??? anybody know how to by-pass this thing to get home?
