Its a dealer only thing. It has to be programmed to match the chip in your key. If anyone could buy one it would kind of defeat the purpose.

Personally, I am not at all worried about it. It is a very very rare failure.

Max BMW. Not sure why antenna is N/A. Probably cause it's a deler installation only??

It's an antenna. It doesn't need to be programmed. All that crazy secret information resides in the BMS-K which interrogates the key through said antenna.

So say you are cruising around So America & this thing goes south. Can a US dealer program a couple of new keys & FedEX the keys & ring to you or does the dealer have to phisically have the bike. If thats so, could be a pretty catastrpphic failure. Kind of kills an adventure bike to have this sort of non repairable item.

My understanding is that the antenna gets auto-coded when it talks to the BMSK for the first time. If it then gets connected to a different bike it will kamakazi and be useless.

You can carry a spare unit with you. If the antenna on the bike dies you yank the plug from the old antenna and plug it into a new unit. Then tape your spare key into the new antenna and the bike will start. There is no further coding needed. This can only work with a brand new antenna, and once you have plugged the new antenna in it will then only work with that bike.

You can only do this with keys that come with the bike of course.

EWS Immobilizer antenna threadfest

Uggg. got a EWS error today and my 07 1200GS (1400 miles) left me stranded at a gas station. I tried the spare key and that didn't work either (neither is on a key ring). Fortunately, a friend picked up me and the bike.

Anyone else have this problem? I did a quick search and didn't find anything; I'm calling the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks,
Adam

Unfortunately, this is the immobliizer antenna ring around the key hole that needs to be replaced.. the bike will not start no matter what you do, until the EWS is fixed.

and....
they have been backordered
most folks who've needed one... have had to wait at least 3 weeks

i hope that is changed
there is no way to "bandaid" the problem until the part arrives from germany

Same thing happened to my buddies bike two weeks ago...2 week old 07 GS...stopped in Sequoia NP, Ca. Would not start....like the guys said..the antannae ring was not reading the key...cost us almost 3 days.. Sunday to Tuesday afternoon. To me this a solution to a problem that does not exist and the solution IS the problem. If his bike would have quit the day before we would have been in Death Valley, Ca...not good. We had the bike towed by another BMW owner two hours to Fresno...and they drilled one out of a new bike ...got us on the road...Good job by the dealer to get out of towners back on the road.

In Google type "ews site:advrider.com" without the quotes. You'll get plenty of info...

Wow. I like the bike but this sux. Thanks to everyone for the quick feedback. Since I can't get the bike to the dealer until next weekend, if the part is back ordered.... well, you get the idea.

Thanks for the no-band-aid note as well, I was wondering if there was any way to patch it.

Glad I still got my '99 RT.
