I reported that a new '08 RT owner reported this on his bike as well. I thought the issue was put to bed.

Sorry to hear this...a pisser indeed...could you get the part number off your failed antenna ring [assuming it was the antenna] and post it? Also can you "grill" the dealer repairing it about any real resolution for this problem? Like ask them what BMW tells the dealers about this "non-problem" and what if anything they have done or are planning to do...thanks...again sorry the snake bit you!

Hey, Didja Do Dumb Like Me

I am planning to go to Alaska this summer of 09, and that is the only reason I would want one as well, would you be willing to sell yours after your trip to Alaska.

I am going toToronto, Montréal, Québec into her other parts of the Northeast US this summer I don't feel I need one for that trip. But we'll want one going all the way north to the outskirts of Alaska.

I'll prolly keep it on the bike. Kind of like a spare tire. If your broke down 20 miles or 200 miles from home, your still broke down. I would be in more of a hurry to get out of Quebec than I would the outskirts of Alaska!

Oh crap! I've done it now!!

Sorry Wallowa, I'd sent it back to the dealer before I read this so not sure of the part number of the old unit. Still hasn't been 100% confirmed that its the Antenna. Will advise when I find out.

Extension Harness Part Number

Did we ever get a part number on extension cable? Helge Pedersen talks about it in his DVD on the R1200GS and it seems to make things a lot easier. Anyone else see that and know the part number for the cable??\

Do I really need the cable extension or will just hooking up the spare ring antenna work?

Unfortunately you are on the point of the spear at the moment and in the best position to get solid first hand information concerning an "EWS" issue... possibly your dealer can get the number off the removed antenna if it is replaced and the number of new one.. try asking your dealer what BMW is telling them about all this...certainly BMW has been communicating service updates to the dealers and hopefully giving some information about a future fix to resolve this ridiculous situation..

Anyway sorry your bike is down Warden that does indeed suck. Hang in there and thanks for any info you can pass along

Ok, picked up the beast this morning...
I can't confirm this, as I haven't seen the old part number, but the new antenna ring on the bike is "The newest revision" as told by BMW. When asked if it was a new part number, the affirmative was given.

Could someone with a 08 GS or GSA see if they can spot a part number on there antenna assy, ill have a look over the weekend. If anyone can narrow down where the part number is on the unit, please sing out.

Be interesting to compare.

The number of the replaced part isn't on the invoice then?

He likely doesn't have the invoice yet.

It's my understanding that you're advised NOT to bring the invoice home at the same time as the keys.

Something about the chip....

Pissed

I better not be getting an invoice, as the bike was 10 days old at the time of the failure.

Its going back soon for a new windscreen and LED tail light aswell...

To poolside's point, though, you might still get an "n/c" (no charge) invoice with all the same data as any other invoice.
