Yup, you got me.

I don't write the check unless there are all 3 keys included. If everyone insisted, everyone would have all the keys.

Wish it were true...but if BMW will not acknowledge problems such as the EWS screw up..they sure as hell are not going to pop for a real spare key!

And yes I bought one...

I've been handed 3 keys on every bmw I've bought in the past 4 years.

4 12 gs's. From different dealers. Perhaps you should learn how to ask. Your not dealing with bmw so don't use them as an excuse.

You don't ask, you don't get. Do you pay msrp? Please don't say yes.

Hey Marty - please put in a good word for me with your buddy Mike and ask him to give me the same treatment. I'm picking up my new GS this weekend!

First..BMW sends out the bikes with one metal and one plastic...that crap is on BMW's plate, you are in fact dealing with what BMW includes with the bike...next I bought the Adventure; only 15% of production are Adventures..not much bargining on Adventures...much bargining on GSs...No, I did not pay full boat on the Adventure...but I would have.

Sorry this was off topic for this thread...

Still waiting to hear from BMW on the cause and cure for EWS...dealers, just like we owners, don't have a clue!

Like the servo brakes, I was hoping that EWS would just quietly go away as the model evolved. I'd rather the bike be stolen at Starbucks than stranded at Point of Rocks.

I've ridden 1500 miles now with my spare antenna and spare key living an inch away from the ignition with no problem so I guess having both keys next to the antenna can't be all that bad??

Bluhduh Ews! 2007 R12gsa, 2500 Miles

I have read numerous replies on this already. To the people who think it's no big deal...well, you're entitled to your opinion I guess.

What I see is a fault that occurs often enough for a trend to develop. If we can define some kind of trend, then it's a problem. Early on in the bike's life being one such trend. I read the UK forum posts and while water may not be the only cause, it can be A cause.

My bike got soaked last week and lo and behold, yesterday while in the middle of a long ride, I got the damn error! I called my local dealership to ask for assistance and was told the bike is basically dead. The service writer did tell me if I moved the key away from the bike and then back again...and maybe roll the bike some, it might start, but I should still get it to a dealer and have the antenna replaced as soon as possible.

So here's what happened...after turning the key on numerous times, rolling the bike...moving the key away...turning off my two cell phones and disconnecting the battery...what FINALLY worked was turning the ignition on with the emergency kill switch in the off position. Once everything is on...I moved the kill switch to the on position and the bike started. I repeated that last night and again this morning.

***A note about water***
While I was going through the above steps I did notice water had collected inside the key slot. I blew in it as best I could to get some of it out. I really don't know if this helped...but it's worth noting given what our English brethren have come up with. I will check my part number later this afternoon.

I almost forgot...rode home today in a downpour and once home...I was able to restart the bike without using the kill switch "trick"

Count me in those that believe on a bike of this type...adding items that can go wrong on a long ride is not always wise. Especially if it's something that you should be able to disable when going on a long ride. How nice would it be to COMPLETELY ELIMINATE a potential problem before setting out on a journey to places where help is hard to find??? And then be able to add the FEATURE once you were back home. This isn't rocket science.

My two cents...written while not pissed off like I was last night.

Has T-mex cracked the enduring mystery of how to disable the EWS? Tune in next week for further EWS adventures...

Anyone else have this problem? I did a quick search and didn't find anything; I'm calling the dealer tomorrow.

Thanks,

I have a 1200 gs 2005, it would be give me the ews error about once a month. If I walked away from the bike, about 2 or 3 min it would not give me the ews message. I just got back from the dealer (grass roots bmw in cape girardeau) they replaced it for free no ?? asked. They did a great job on it.

OK..I've waded through the fact and flotsam with this matter, and my eyeballs are falling out.

BUT..I have two reasonable questions:

What is the most current incarnation (part number) of the antenna ring, and...

What is the part number for the extender (BMW "special tool") hardness ?

Thanks,

Steve

Right, the newest part number as fitted to my bike on the 28/03/2008 and as the BMW Service centre was notified the week or so prior to this being fitted is: 61357717136-01

This replaced the failed 207 Part on my 2008 1200 GSA Adv.

The part number the hiccuped on me over the weekend was of the 207-1 variety. Looks like WARDEN got the latest and greatest(?) just over a week ago.
