what do you think??

Saw this and wanted to get some opinions

I have always been and xr/xl guy and would love to add another cheap ride to the stable but not if it's a pain to fix up. I saw some parts are discontinued, but I figure there has to be parts or possibilities out there. Again just wondering if it's worth checking into

Thanks Klaus will try that again. Am still having some difficulty starting the beast. Once running it purrs nicely.
Tried the techniques described here for this bike and maybe I am not quite doing it right. Will keep at it while my leg holds out!
Check your stator, should be connections under your seat, some where around 250 ohms is good, too high or too low and it will be hard to start. (Rickys aftermarket stators test around 100 ohms though for some reason.)
I re-wound mine and it is one or two kicks now hot or cold.
Oh yeah, never turn the throttle while kicking, NEVER!

Listing is down you must have bought it already, lol. They go quick if they're cheap like $1500 or less. How much were they asking?

Went to go ride a few minutes ago and when I started the old beast, I noticed a strange kinda rattling ticking noise coming from the right side case. It it increased in speed with a light rev. and just as I was about to switch it off it, the noise stopped. it only happened for like 20 seconds tops.

What could that noise be??

Never got a response from the poster. They were asking $300. Sometimes I wonder, I had seen it before and figured it was gone. Again, it was so cheap for a big thumper, I figure I probably couldn't go wrong even if I spent a grand in parts.

Yeah that price is a steal. I would have bought it just for parts.

It sounds like the compression release lever is contacting the rocker arm. It could be out of adjustment, or just sticking. I disconnected mine for just that reason. I never felt the need for that feature, and consider it more of a risk than help.

Is it cold where you are. Colder than normal?? It's the oil pump by-pass valve ratteling. Normal. Goes away once the oil warms up a bit.

I am running 10W40 Penzoil. I would of dropped it. but it still gets pretty warm in the daytime. the Haynes manual says 10w40 is good for the ambient temps im running but I'm guessing i should drop to 10W30 or something?? People here are smarter than the book I have discovered...

10/40 is OK. Just let the engine warm up a bit when it's really cold out.

Ok, Without me going to the garage and getting the OE service manual to look at this is the way I think this works.

The oil pump has two rotors. One rotor takes the oil from the sump or bottom of the engine and sends it up that pipe behind the front down tube to the oil tank under the gas tank. Oil then flows down the down tune and enters the other side of the pump. This side services the engine lubrication side of things. Now since the oil is cold as can be it's really thick and thus has a lot of resistance to get it moving. Now this is where the by-pass valve comes into play. The valve is spring loaded and when the thick oil is pushed through the pump the valve slides over uncovering another passage way to allow the thick oil to have some where to go. The spring slams the valve shut which is what your hearing. This happens over and over until the oil warms up some and becomes thinner taking the load off of the pump.

This is my idea of how this cycle works. If I'm wrong someone can correct my line of reasoning.
