Since there has been a recent rash of valve seats trying to jump ship I suggest you stop running the engine and preform some exploratory surgery before you hear the BIG BANG $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I wish I still had a XL in the stable. My favorite is the 1987 RWB. I had an 83 back when with a seriously pumped motor.

These bikes need a certain minimum investment to be done right. Everthing needs to be torn down and looked at at nearly 30 years old.
The upside is tearing them down and putting them together is more fun than riding them.
As lond as it wasnt run out of oil or.exploded the cases, it wont be much of a problem.

Clutch basket and rest of clutch all there, if a bit grubby.

I am curious what broke the cylinder without hurting the piston. If something big enough to do that got around the crank area to do that there should be other signs too. If the same piece did both then it had to travel a rather circuitous path to get there.

The broken pieces look to have a polished/finished surface on it, possible former snap ring groove? did you look real close at the clutch hub and basket? Is there any signs of former threads? Did you account for all the broken cylinder pieces too?

Not trying to insult intelligence or anything, just rambling on and guessing myself from clues present.

I had a tiny piece of something get loose in my engine after many thousands of miles of running and it got between the crank gears out at the oil pump gears. It bent the end of the crank a little and I was able to bend it back to true. Curiously a few miles after repairing that the crank web broke on the flywheel side. (possibly unrelated to that incident) It wasn't till actual reassembly with a different crank that I found the broken piece, it was stuck to the pulse coil.
Ive had a real close look at the shrapnel and by the look of one piece in particular, Im starting to think it may have been left in the engine by the knob who rebuilt it. (me) It looks less and less like a piece of the engine and more like a foreign object.

Particularly in the next photo, see there's a hollow rectangular section in the middle.

I can't think what part of the engine it could be, any ideas???
Yes, I bite my nails!!!

Did the PO have to replace anything else besides the piston?

No PO was mechanically challenged, and did nothing to the bike while he owned it. Had it professionally serviced though. Rode the bike for years with knackered steering head bearings.

I rebuilt the motor. New piston & rebore, Pro X conrod kit, all new bearings, seals and gaskets & camchain. New valve guides, Kibblewhite valves and springs. I also fitted an oil cooler off a DR200 Suzuki. Can't see how oil the cooler could have produced the shrapnel, though.

So that rules out the PO. Only thing I can come up with is perhaps something around the kick start shaft let go.
