I noticed traces of the hollow rectangle part in the original photo and wondered about it too.

I luckily(?) have another engine apart that I can compare to your pieces. I can see nothing even close. It does look like if wrong (long) oil pump bolts were used it could pop the end of the closed hole off inside the crankcase area, but they would have case paint on them, mine do there. They are kind of rounded bumps that mimicked the round shape in your photos but....

Due to cloudy memory and length of time I was jumping on the notion of something in the clutch case coming loose, like a clutch basket or whatnot. Studying my engine pieces I realize now that those gears are on the other side of the crank bearing and anything that got into them would have to be from the transmission or crankcase cavity, or head/camchain area.

I also studied the head cover and head and saw no clues either. Maybe it was a foreign object, but what? How? Anything missing from your benchtop? Got any kids that may have been around the open engine?

I can send pics of intact cases or other parts if you have any questions how something should look.

Good luck with the search, keep us updated.

New XL rider

Hey guys, new to the forum, just picked up an XL600r. Never really ridden dirt before, and I just wanted something that was pretty competent on and off road.
I've seen some great inspiration on here and was just curious what mods people think are essential to the bike.

It came with the stock tank and a 5.8 gallon acerbis, which I have on it now. For some reason at higher rps the headlight gets brighter and the taillight gets very dim. Anybody have any ideas why this might be? Any easy suspension fixes?

You need a new battery or at least a good charge. my bike had a bad battery when i bought it, turn signals, and tail/brake lights sucked at anything past idle. one gel battery later it was fine.

You can do all kinds of stuff to the suspension, I put 15W in the forks with new seals and it was a major improvement. i personally like stiff shocks. I set them to about 8psi when i'm doing hard riding. I dont think the fork oil was ever changed before soo nasty ha. I want to do a fork swap eventually. but im looking at a rebuild atm. I have a re-sprung rear shock but never had a stock one so i wouldn't know the difference.

And imho, you're gonna have you hands full with the XL off-road especially if you're new. The XL is an "aquired taste" as a dirt bike (lack of a better term) I love the machine, when it was running i could dust crf450s/rm250s motocross type bikes with ease but I'm in prime off-road environment for this bike. I usally get bored on days off and wander the desert til I find people, then I just follow them. Seen interesting things and met some kick ass people.

Also you're alot closer to MCMA111 if you ever need engine work, you lucky bastard!

All right boys, question for y'all,

Seems that the bike gets erratic spark when it gets a bit past normal operating temperature, after say idling or a spell or what have you, stator has been replaced with a Ricky unit.

Thanks for any help.

If it helps, more accurately I would say that the timing goes all to shit, bike bucks, will sometimes rev but not very high, backfire etc

You've just described what I'm currently going through. Though I replaced my cam chain and tensioner spring about 5K miles ago, so hopefully it's not the timing. Got a ricky stator about 2K miles ago, it tested wonky so I took it out and replaced it with a new one from them.

Seemed like that solved the issue, but only for about a day. My reg/rec, coil, CDI, and AC reg are all replaced as well, checked all grounds ...

Frustrating indeed.

If it is directly attributable to engine temp, not ambient temp or running time, I would guess stator or pulse coil since they are both engine mounted.

Never hurts to hang an additional ground from the harness to frame also.

Pulse coil should be a simple A/C waveform if you have access to a graphing multimeter or scope.

Stator should be steady RPM dependent A/C voltage.

Haha, the last time I said "when in doubt" I replaced most of the electrical system. Except that. I suppose that's next.
