Baja 1000 spectator planning

99,
I'm looking to *finally* make it down to the Baja 1000 this year, after several years of wanting to go. Next year I may be heading overseas, so my motivation is high. I'll be taking either a 2WD Mercedes Sprinter van, but may be able to borrow an 4WD F-150 from my best friend. I'll be heading down there with a friend or two, have a decent amount of experience / gear for camping while down there. I'm looking for advice and/or experiences on how to get the most out of this Mexico trip. Thanks!

Loren

My fresh ride:

I suggest you hook up with "Summerinmaine" and "trey650" on here.
Those guys along with a bunch of other ADV'ers organize a couple Pit stops for assorted race teams 9bikes, trucks, and buggies). They do it right, have a great time, are great people, and you'll really get to experience the event.
Those guys will post race pit plans as time gets closer.

As we get closer to Nov. a thread will appear (from out of nowhere). Keep your eye out for it, my guess is all your questions will be answered.

Those guys (Tim, SIM & Trey) made it possible for a Baja newbie like myself to experience the 1K (safely).
I live on the East coast so I had really no idea what I was getting into.
It's nice to be with a good group of guys like that, everyone watches out for everyone else and nobody gets left behind.

Hey Tim,
Hey 'Rags,

I hope to see you guys down there this year...

+1 for Trey650 and Summerinmaine

Gotta say last year was a heck of a time..... The food, the comraderie and the racing. We even had our fair share of excitement as you can read in this thread. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...ight=baja+1000

If you are caging they might just sign you up to bring some chairs...... lol

this year will be my first baja 1000. one of the things i love about the race is the dedication of the spectators. cant wait to hear more about the adv. pits. ive been following the race on this site for a few years and you guys do a bang up job as far as pit stops(and drinking) go. hope to see some of you there this november.

I'm in

I'd love to get down there to watch. If I could help out in the pits, all the better! I've actually already signed up for the time off so i guess I'm kind of committed to going...or laying on the couch for 4 days. I'll be keeping track of this thread, hopefully there will be lots of us going.

You have very different animal this year....The 40th anniversary 1000 will be a stage race with 2 starts, Tijuana and Ensenada, a stop in La Paz and a sprint race to Cabo San Lucas!! Start planning now....2007 will be epic!

I remember reading somewhere that if you are bringing your friends truck you either need to bring him or have some sort of paperwork before they will let it into Mexico. I could be wrong but it would suck to find out at the border. I am thinking of going on my bike and camping.

Good call on the paperwork, I can definetly look into that.

For those who have been before, any inputs on taking my Sprinter? It's 2WD, but isn't terribly heavy and I'm not afraid to drive it on the dirt. Sand and deep ruts will be a problem, not sure what to expect. If I can get to most areas on graded dirt, that would be fine. This will hopefully be my first of many. Thanks for all the inputs!

TJ to Ensenada is going to be a lame transfer section, not a race.
Care to enlighten us with facts about "a stop in La Paz and a sprint race to Cabo"?

I have some experience driving Sprinter in Baja. As long as you stick to hard packed dirt you'll be fine, however don't go near anything resembling sand. We drove onto the shoulder to take a leak and got stuck for 2 hours until drunk fishermen in old Ford PU came to rescue us. It gets stuck really fast.

You can see the tarmac in the left corner yet it's so far!

Spectating Baja 1000 (1st timer)!

Hello everyone,

I'll be heading down to Ensenada for the first tim this year for Baja 1000 and I want to make the most of it. Looking for feedback on best places to be and what to do? I'm trying to follow along with how it all works and the break down of events, but I'm a little lost.

- What is contingency?
- Where is the best location to set up seating for the race?
- Are people ride the course once the race is over?
- Can anyone suggest a good rent a spot for renting bikes down there?

Any feedback or advice would be much appreciated! We're looking to meet up with other spectators and have a killer time!
