The only thing that applies is there has to be a light, it has to be at the rear of the veh and it has to not be blocked-has to be legible/readable.

there is a new law in effect about legibility that says the plate must be horizontal and not vertical .. had a CHP chase me down to tell me this and ask why I had no turn signals and to tell me to slow down. then turned and walked out of Napa..

Eh?

California Vehicle Code 5201 amended in 2011 to include license plates mounted parallel to the ground so the characters are upright and display from left to right.

Josh, the section you cited doesnt say anything about the rear fender..mike, can you cite a different section that applies to the rear fender? Seems the law is the same in the 5201 section. Could be something new that applies, I haver been gone 2 yrs now and maybe Im not aware. Im leaving for a week right now and will check further when i get back.

Sorry Guys, thought I was going to make it...wheel bearings changed, air filter cleaned,... broken footpeg bolt still not out. I just stripped the stupid easy out 1/8" drive square.....

Anyone have a T-handle for a 1/8 square drive I can borrow? 331-5310

Mike, your right. It is not so much where it is mounted but the orientation and legibility. The change in 2011 was it has to be horizontal and read from left to right. It doesn't matter if it is mounted to the fender as long as it is horizontal, legible and reads from left to right. The plates mounted on the fender lengthwise with the fender that read from top to bottom are the ones that will probably get LEO attention.

This seems to be correct, I followed this up with the officers in my unit (CHP), horizontal and legible. I would fight the fender citation.

Good meeting you Greg, sorry I wasn't able to ride.

Got that damned broken bolt out finally! Had to file the drive square multiple times, torch the crap out of the foot peg gusset thingy whatever it's called, and it still fought me all the way out.

Anybody riding tomorrow?

JP
