The planned order of work is;
  • Get it to start
  • Pass the MOT
  • Strip it down and repaint it
  • Learn to ride it!

I am told that the running is intermittent so I am hoping that this fix to the CDI will cure it;

Congrats on the bike, and looking forward to pics of your progress!

Thanks Pablo for your previous reply.
Now I have a question for anyone who may be able to solve this .
After Daves carb mods I've got her running but it seems real rich at low revs wont run at all below 1500 ,revs up smartly after 2000 and revs out well although with some spluttering .
I removed the washer from under the needle - no difference
screwed air screw in or out - no difference
opened airbox- very little difference
pulled choke on- makes it worse
Its got to be something simple ....and I just want to go for a ride and try out my new suspension.

If turning the mixture (air) screw doen't make revs go up or down (blip the throttle after each 1/2 turn) then there's a problem right there.

The stock bike can handle a very rough idle at ~1000. Anything acceptable is past 1300.

Yes ,but exactly what the problem is I'm at a loss to find out. Its running so rough around 1500 that turning the mixture screw just doesnt seem to have any effect.
It runs almost ok for about 2 seconds when started from cold .
Couldnt be electrical could it ??

Is it making any black smoke at idle?

Yes ,but idle is 1500 and real rough (it stalls with any less revs) runs clean at high revs tho and will not hold consistent revs at a fixed throttle opening, ie revs fluctuate up and down.

Black smoke is too rich mixture, right? Do you use hi flow air filter? You said that opening airbox didn't make any difference.. Maybe mixture screw is damaged? Did you inspect whole carb?

I inspected the whole carb and it all seemed to be in order .
I havent been able to afford a hi flow filter as yet but on the Dommie opening the airbox side panel bypasses the filter and there still seems to be way too much fuel for the amount of air available.
From what I've been told on the Honda trailbike forum it seems the 55 pilot may be too big so I'm going to go through the process of replacing the OE 48 and see how it reacts.

Sounds familiar. Have you removed the needle tube (#19 in the pic) recently? If so, then the small part right above it (labeled #2) may have fallen out without you knowing and it will create the problems you are describing. When this part is properly inserted, it sticks up about 1mm into the bore. This part is not available by itself, but if you order a new needle, it should come with this part.

#2 is still in place but seems to stick up more than 1mm from memory ,I had the tube out and although #2 was loose it didnt seem to want to come out so I just screwed it back together.
Carb is coming out today for another cleaning and more thorough inspection now that im armed with more knowledge , this is all good practice for doing my Africa Twin carbs later in the year (gota get this one going first!)

Hi Wolfy, I haven't been on this thread in awhile, but I'm glad that you found such a nice NX. The amount of work that those guys put into it was just amazing. Steal of a deal, too. Congrats and Enjoy! -R

Well I got to the bottom of my carb issues, I found that I had inserted the air cut valve upside down I went with the #48 slow jet just to be sure and it runs sweet, no stalling ,good power.
Took it for a quick 30km shakedown blast round some local tracks and I'm well impressed with the whole build
especially pleased to have that WP front end back in use again.
Heres a couple of pics.

Thats good news,nice to have a good outcome.
Bike looks good, kick and electric is a good combo.
I have been through French pass many years ago on a trawler cool place but treacherous tides.
What are you going to do for a windscreen?

Maybe. The NX stator is a little wider than the XL one, so might not fit. Just so you know what the problem might be.
