Finally got the Brembo/320mm disc sorted. Hot as hell today for Ireland, around 29degs here in the shade.
Brakes are strong compared to the Nissins I had before and very progressive feel.
The Disc is the same as the XRL kit SM6010C but the bracket that comes with the kit doesn't fit the NX.
Hose mounting is a bit shonky, none of the braided hoses I had were the right length or fittings, I had to use a NOS RMX 250 one that I had lying around which was a bit long.

Question NX not starting - Kill switch position?

Haven't ridden much this summer, and last had my '88 NX out for a spin a couple of weeks ago. I was going to take it out the other day - after the rain stopped, finally - but it wouldn't start. I pulled the plug wire to check for a spark and nothing. It had been running just fine last time out, now, zero. I never use the kill switch, but the thought occured to me, could I have bumped it into the "off" positon? But when I look at it I'm not sure which is the "off" and which is "Run" !
I believe the "Run" position is with the Run side depressed, Off side up.


But if that is the case, then why no spark?

Have you checked the clutch cut-out?
Is there a side stand cut-out?
The switch is on the way you have it.
Off is the top button depressed.

No side stand cut-out - normally start it leaning on the side stand - and I normally pull in the Clutch when starting. BTW, lights, etc work ok.

Mine is an '88, . It won't start unless it's in neutral, even with the clutch pulled.

Also there are TWO switches that need to be in the correct position. Along with the key turned on. And in Neutral.

Check the clutch switch.
There is a small unit beside the clutch with two connectors.
Make sure both connectors are plugged in if so chase those two wires looking for a break.

It should start in any gear with the clutch pulled in.

Thats a super clean NX650, it looks almost showroom.
Mine used to look a bit like that but the cases are a bit furry now.

My cases are messed up also. I was able to buy the left side brand new, but the right side is not available. I was thinking about replacing it with one from an XR650L, but I just really like the original color.

I'm not that worried about mine looking a bit worn, I've lost enough riding time this summer fitting the big brakes, anything else can wait till the winter.

Buy the EBC supermoto kit SMC6010C the C stands for contour which is a scalloped edge to the disc.
It will come with a bracket BRK009 which is useless for the NX650 but will fit the XRL.
Take off the old brake disc and fit the EBC one.
I took off the fork legs and brought them into a local engineer with a lump of alloy plate and he made the bracket for me.
I can take some dimensions but its probably easy enough for the local shop to measure it and make it up.
I also changed the caliper from the stock Nissin to a Brembo from an SLR 650 which is a Euro model with the same engine and same brake setup as the NX.
I don't know which models of bike were sold in the US with this setup.
I know the later NTV650 Deauville has the same caliper as well but not sure about the mounts, if you are getting the bracket made up then it doesn't really matter that much.

If you want to increase braking power without getting a bracket made up the SLR650 caliper and bracket are a direct bolt on fit to the NX650 and the 4 hole mount disc from an Africa twin XRV750 will fit directly without any modifications this will give you a 276mm disc as opposed to the 254mm stock.
The Brembo master cylinder and caliper has much better feel than the Nissin unit.

I purchased a can of Rust-Oleum, 248637 Metallic Vintage Copper, for the Rothman project that has yet to really begin. http://www.rustoleum.com/en/product-...-rust/metallic

It looked like the best color match that I have seen. A test panel was sprayed and it's not even close. Need try another color...



VHT makes engine paints. Burnt Copper Metalic, SP402, might be a better match and is heat rated. http://www.vhtpaint.com/products/enginemetallic/
