Homemade Luggage Rack w/ Hard Bags
I couldn't see spending hundreds of dollars for a luggage rack and to mount some boxes on the side of my bike. So I fired up the welder and made my own. It's a bit Barney Rubble and it's still in the "prototype" stage but I think I'll be able to strap some stuff on and take off for a few days anyway.
The bag/mount comes off the luggage rack with two bolts each, and the rack comes off the bike with four bolts. Here are some pics of what I did.

Looks Ok To Me
I don't weld so I had a local shop make up a rack for my KLR out of aluminum and yours look better than mine!! I havent done it to mine either, but I've seen some of the commercial made racks have a bar that extends from the back side around the rear fender for side to side bracing.
EXCELLENT!

That looks awesome. I bought a rack off of Ebay and it works well, if I had a welder it would be better. Great looking bike to.

I made a rack for two tall 50 ammo cans for my xl600. mine works and yours will too. i made the bar around the rear tire that goes from box to box and it really sturdies up the whole thing. $.02

Between the right case and the fender looks like a good spot for a extra fuel can . Nice and protected, away from the exhuast...

Nice racks...I wonder if one can just sketch a drawing, get it into a CAD program and then just mass distribute the drawings for ADVer's to decide how to fabricate them own their own? Would be cheap way to go...

Metal? I used Elmer's glue and sticks of wood!
No, it's 16ga 0.750 mild steel square tubing.
I might run a tube around the rear behind the license plate...or maybe run braces up to the subframe underneath. I dunno yet. I just bolted the bags on there and rode around for awhile to see what would happen. See how floppy they are. Tomorrow I'll load them up with bottled water and really put them to the test. Maybe I'll strap a cooler full of beer on the back too. I was looking for a water bottle or fuel bottle today but haven't found the ideal container yet. Or a way to mount it. I'm looking for an aluminum bottle about the size of a 2 liter soda bottle.

Nice job!
A buddy of mine recently got a ticket here in WA for having his license plate mounted vertically like your's.
