Gorgeous pics from two years ago. Funny enough, we ran through Kluane two years ago also.

No dogs, just two boys.
Great pics Mark!

Yes, Comet is a rough coat Jack Russell. Before him I didn't know there's rough coat, broken coat, and smooth coat JR's.

Most Excellent

Great report, I am planning a trip to AK this summer, Fairbanks to Prudhoe then Fairbanks to Anchorage, Haines and a ferry to Prince Rupert.
May have to add Ketchican if I can.

Used to fly floats out of Victoria as far as PR so I look forward to seeing the rest of the passage at water level.

OOh can't wait to see those mountains, now being in a tent with those cubs around well . . . .

Add bear spray to list and be scrupilous about NO FOOD in TENT ever!!

Thanks may give you a call when I am there.

Mark, Just found this today. I was on Annette Island several times in the 1970's. Construction work. At the Coast Guard Station, the fish hachery, some storage tanks, and a housing project.

Nice to see your pictures of a very nice place with very nice people.

Would have liked to see more pictures of the new totem.

Thank you for taking us along...

Thank you all so very much for taking the time to share with me in this part of my heritage. As per request, I'm posting more photos of the new totem pole as well as some of the others found on Annette Island.

Here's my cousin Aaron Horne about a week before the pole raising.

His brother Kevin also did some of the carving.

And more of carrying it to the raising ceremony. In the distance is a tall pole on the street corner near the old Health Clinic.

Left to right on the totem you see the blackened end of a canoe next to a man carrying a Cross symbolizing the relocation from BC and the importance of Christianity to those who followed Father Duncan to settle new Metlakatla, Alaska, a hammer signifying the building of a strong community, and a carving tool representing the importance of art in our culture.

This is the house of Master Carver David Boxley. He's long been one of the most prolific carvers and teachers of Tsimshian culture. His work can be found all around the world. He lives in Washington State and his dance group Git-Hoan is also world famous.

Here's that pole near the old Health Clinic.

And this one's outside the new Clinic.

This one's out at the Fish Hatchery at the end of the road on the south end of the island.

And we'll wrap it up with another shot that includes Comet and the new Breakwater. Thanks again, Mark H.

I like this picture the smiles show just how much fun you and Comet had.

I'm so happy this report was bumped to the first page as I missed it when you made you created it. Thank you and Comet for sharing your travels with us. Seeing your AK, family, a traditional celebrations, and your fun little buddy first thing this morning with my coffee started my 2010 perfectly.

For years I have been fascinated by AK and the places that are a little off the beaten path and you have just introduced me to another place I was unaware of.

I'm glad you posted the additional pictures of the totem and explained what the different things meant. Every time I see a totem I wonder what the different things are saying/representing.

Do you have any more pictures of that trip you are willing to share with us? Oh yeah, and Comet walking the pipe is great ~ what a wonderful buddy you have, he looks like he really enjoys every second and is a great companion.

Thanks again for making my morning.

Great report, Mark

Hi Mark: Great report! Glad to see you're still riding. You're a multitalented individual and take wonderful photos. I think you got my share of panache.
Scratch Comet's tummy for me.

Someone posted a link to this ride report up in Facebook and now many more are getting to revisit and see a slightly lesser known area and it's culture in our great State of Alaska.

Thanks again to all of you for taking the time to read it and for all the wonderful compliments. It's greatly appreciated.

Your far north friend, Mark H.
