Hit up ortega today and up north main divide, While still on the concrete There are signs on the ground saying that the road is not open to motorized vehicles due to damage from the storm. I could have easily gone past these signs but I decided to head back. I cant wait till these open, It's a shame they seem to be closed during the rain season since in my opinion that is the best time to see these mountains.

Alternatives that are open after a storm?

After turning away from the closed gates last Sunday I went to Thomas Mtn, an hour of slab away from Ortega/Main Divide. Open gates, rain ruts, mud slides, too much snow. I guess SBNF isnt quite as protective as the CNF guardians

I couldn't get to the peak, too much snow. I'm heading back for another attempt tomorrow

I think taking a 100HP, two-wheeled Ditch Witch might have contributed to making your trip more difficult

Thomas Mtn

Take highway 74 east all the way to Hemet (there are better/funner routes but this is the most direct to explain). Just after you leave Hemet on 74 you can pick up the trail 5s15 on the right side of the road (just before the Bee Canyon turn off on the left). The peak is 6200 or 6400 ft, mostly fire road, all open (today). You can take it length ways to garner valley (back on the 74) or bail out before the peak (thats what I did when the snow stopped me) and head down toward Anza.

I went back up today and had to turn around at 6100ft, too much snow for the 100hp ditch witch and my minor skills. Jeeps and trucks were stuck everywhere today.

Talking Trabuco District, fresh poop...

Sent to me today...

Due to the heavy rains, snow, and winds in December the District is still in the clean-up process. All the recreation facilities - campgrounds and picnic areas are closed due to downed trees and hazardous trees still standing. The roads are currently closed as well. Assessments are being made today to determine when the roads can be reopened and where repairs will be required.

Thanks for the update Pointman. You're not by any chance one of the volunteer rangers I've seen up there on an XR650L, are you?

Was up there today. The paved roads going to North Main Divide were closed due to storm damage. The road going to the Wildomar OHV area was closed too. Oh yea, and Maple Springs rd was closed too.
