Strange stuff. If I had a tinfoil hat I'd be screaming "Conspiracy!" and painting my bikes flat black.

Thanks

Don't worry the trails are still there.

I rode Indian Truck Trail this afternoon. The gates are open at the bottom of Indian Truck trail and main divide. I did not go by EL Cariso. It was hot out there. Did not see a single person or vehicle once I got past the residences. Kinda nice. Next time I think I'll do it in the morning.

I coulda sworn those trails used to be on that map.

They were, Ben.

Why they are no longer shown is a mystery to me.

Someone, somewhere got Google to edit their map.

Thanks
CA Stu

PS They are not shown on Mapquest either... Better go buy some paper maps to archive, I guess.

My Garmin Street Navigation Software looks the same as the Google map. I suppose they all use the same database.

I'm just speculating that the database was updated to indicate that either the roads were closed or that they are 4WD roads. If that is the case then they would not want to include these roads in navigation software or a navigation service like google or mapquest.

I have a recent version of Delorme Topo and they show all the roads and all the hiking trails.

I like the Forrest Service maps. They are good for the roads and trails but are probably not up to date with all the housing tracts building right up to the national forrest boundry.

What I'm asking is if its legally open to ride up there from lincoln?

If you don't know then PLEASE refrain from comment.

So-far I have one reply says No and the other says open in november.

Has anybody been caught riding in a closed areas ?
Do they patrol closed areas ?
What do they do tell you your in a closed area / ticket / jail ?

The only open roads is the route from Blue Jay to Indian Truck Trail. All public access (including hiking trails) are closed from the peak north. Holy Jim hiking trail is open.

Yes they patrol closed areas. Several of use here patrol the closed areas, but as volunteers, we can't (yet) do anything about it. We can call you in so you will find a nice CNF ranger when you exit that will happily show you what a ticket looks like.

The roads are closed because of the burn area. with no brush on the hills, guys just break any trail they want to. Leading to massive erosion problems. Do us all a favor and stay out of the closed areas. The sooner that area regrows, the sooner everyone can get up there.

I went up to skyline last weekend to see if it was open.
The website said it was open then closed at main divide.
The gate was closed.....
Some nice mountain bikers noticed me trying to figure out how that amazing gate lock works and said "you pull this lever and it releases that one".
Their was no lock.....hmmm?
The forest service website says its open the gate is not locked , I have never seen a ranger up here before, my brothers have never rode here and I wanted to show them....

I feel it is safe to continue....
Lets ride.

We get to the top and I show them this and that.

Me " Ok we have to turn back from here".

Bro " How about that gate? Does it have a lock?"

Me " OH NO , NO WAY we are going through that gate! "

Just then a ranger pulls up hmmm?
He see our plates and says "darn I thought I was going to get to wright tickets".

"OK lets have a look at those bikes"

Bike one no DOT tire Pipe OK.
Bike two same .
Bike three DOT Tires OK , No spark arrester! Doh!

We get a little speech.
about non DOT tires making an unnecessary dent in the earth...

He tells us how he could give my brother a ticket and if their is a fire his bike could be tested and if there are sparks coming out he would be charged and billed for the fire response and even charged with manslaughter if someone was killed.
OR we could push his bike out since he did not see us riding the bike up there.

So we pushed the bike up the hill and coasted it all they way down out.
Seeing another ranger as we coasted by.

We did not argue with him or make a lot of excuses we just listen to what he had to say.

My brother said I think that guy was great , he could of really screwed us.
I thought hmmm I wonder how many people get their bike towed by being jerks to the rangers...

As soon as we got home he tried to put the stock pipe back on butt needed a part , I think he went Monday to get it..........

In his defense He just bought the bike and just hadn't gotten around to putting it back on.
We NEVER ride without ALL the legal stuff Just this one time......
I guess that all it takes.

Anyway Skyline is open.

Dang. Never had them inspect for DOT tires. Not sure if they could write a ticket for that. Only spark arrestor and non street legal bikes. You must have really ticked them off.

Skyline road from Corona to the top of the hill should be open. Here is a quick map.

Red area is no public access at all.
Orage is hike or bike only.
Non color section are in a normal access state.
The current plan is to have everything opened back up Nov 9th.

The maps of the area really need some trimming. They show a lot of roads and trails that never existed, or have long since be shut down. Or the maps are just wrong and show the road going on the wrong side of the hill, etc. I am working to make some better maps, and I have tracks of most of the roads, but trying to find a base topo map I can layer the correct trails over and redistribute for free seems imposable.

Riding the Cleveland... Legally

As a USFS patroller, I have a key to the Indian Truck/No. Main divide gate that leads to Santiago Peak.

I need a week to plan a 'patrol' ride there. Who wants to go? Limit is 8 bikes. You must be registered with Debra Clark in Corona as an USFS volunteer.

Bring your machete!

Stu,

Most of the trails south of the Ortega (74) and west of So. Main Divide are pretty well overgrown now. Most of this is a 'wilderness' area, and even the few equestrians that venture out there have problems.

There is a trail that leads out of our community all the way down to Tenaja Falls, but it is severly overgrown and would need some serious work to be passable.
