70 Miles of Dirt

Rode it Yesterday, entered at Skyline. Nice ride from here to the Maple Springs/Silverado intersection, but lots of walkers and cyclists. About a mile in from the gate there was a small passenger car perpendicular to the road with it's front wheels hanging off the edge. Fool musta tried doing a 3 point turn, plenty of people helping so I just went on.

Rode to Ortega, but decided I needed to see for myself if the Maple Springs gate was open, so I doubled back. Exited through Silverado in time to ride with the Airbrushed Ape-Hanger's Exodus from Cook's. Unfortunately, a Big Red Firetruck had our lane closed on Santiago Canyon Road, apparently Harleys and guardrails don't mix. I hope the guy's OK.

Or just make sure you break both of them so they give you matching boots.

Big bike boots

You know, I was asking this question last weekend with everybody there, wondering if any had tried the 'stich Combats. All I got was the deer-in-the-headlights look. I have read that some like 'em, some think they lack armor and are clunky. I think they're a possibility, but seem a little light for offroad duty.

I have Sidi Sport Rains for road, they're great for that. A bit light for any dirt going tho. And my TCX Pro-comp mx boots are really stiff for ADV riding/adventure touring. I've even considered having vibram soles put on them and just wear them for everything. They're comfortable, and they're hinged, but still a pain to walk in. For full-on dirt still the best, but for longer trips perhaps there's something better.

Vendramini, Sidi's, Aerostich Combats, Alpinstar Scouts, are some of the others worth a look.

I would love to try any of those, especially the Alpinestar Scouts. The other new Alpinestar boot that I hear is nice is the Durban. Unfortunately for me, none of them are offered in my size. I have been wearing Alpinestar Tech 3 that are considered their low end moto boots but work perfect for my Adventrue riding.

If you're going to be riding in the dirt, you need a good Enduro/Dirt riding boot. Chances that you'll crash are that you'll crash in the dirt. A 500lb bike crushing your foot is a great risk. Probably greater than the way I broke my ankle. Don't buy a boot for the least chance of breakage, buy it for the worst chance.
