Gate closed for the weekend by Ranger Dick Fletcher for "severe weather conditions". Sorry folks....keep going, nothing going on here. Last night on Modjeska I couldn't see three feet in front of me and the gate was open....and we rode all night in the pouring rain with no problems. Clear and dry tonight = "severe weather conditions".

Yes, the gate closure is a total joke considering the weather was perfect and the road was nowhere near severe or damaged in any way from that minuscule amount of rain Thursday night when the gate was actualy open. The forest service in this area needs to be replaced with people who actually don't mind working for their money instead of hanging out at the station watching TV, sleeping or eating spaghetti just waiting for the moment when they can close the road.
How do we even begin and to whom can we file complaints about this? I would totally understand if the road was severe in anyway to be closed but in this case no way. Regardless of ranger dicks sitting on their asses or having to repair or patrol a weather damaged road we are still paying their salaries so there fore the gate should remain open at all times. OK rangers/ armchair rangers here's your shot to start listing the excuses you close this road when every other forest road in SoCal remains open.... 1. Drunk idiots? - these guys will always be a factor regardless of weather 2. Severe conditions? - an old lady in a big Caddy could still navigate that road last night. 3. Spaghetti night at the station? Movie Night, now playing "Backdraft" Tomorrows feature "Sommersby" Popcorn and soda provided 4. 5. 6. 7. |

Managed to get in from the Corona side last night (Skyline) but the gate was closed at Peaks Place...
Great ride to four corners then down to Maple Springs. Cloud cover was very cool! I caught up to the park ranger just as I got to the Gate at Maple Springs (also closed...) so was able to get out. Ran into some Inmates but has to bail...Hope you guys got some riding in! ![]()

Nice pics! Aye, was nice seeing you again, I was a tad upset with the closure and let the USF guy know too. In a few years everything will be closed all the time, except to hike/bike, and after all these miles up and down that mountain, that's not many people at all. In fact, some nights there's not one soul up there besides us.
I guess we should all take advantage of it when it *is* open.

So is Skyline open? I want to go ride today.
I don't mind going up and turning around. Also you said Peaks Place gate is closed. I am not sure where that is. I usually go up the Skyline route.

Skyline was open yesterday - not sure about today but I have a key...
Peaks Place gate is up by the old building foundations - about 2 miles north of the "golf ball". Easy to get around (for now) Ken |

Also remember . Skyline gate is managed by riverside. They tell everybody that buys a key to always lock it behind you. So its libel to be locked by anybody who passes through .........
Its not necessarily closed officially ...... And their is no guaranty you'll get back out........... I never go that way anymore ...... |

Anyone check the mutha fookin gate? If it's locked again, I'm going to break out the mountain bike again LOL!!!!!
"And their is no guaranty you'll get back out..........." Yes...yes there is. You just might not go thru an open gate. I can lay my bike on it's side and pull it under that gate in about 30 seconds. If you are on a 600 lb dirt bike, well then, there are still ways out.
