"Too treacherous"? Total BS.
Any 4wd with decent tires and an experienced driver could have got up there and rescued the guy.

Get some better management for whichever agency is in charge of rescues like this, fire the imbecile that let this guy needlessly die.
I'm finding it difficult to understand why this happened this way as well. Tragic.

Always be prepared.

Im not defending or blaming anyone here im just saying learn from this. Always have with you a way to make fire and a flashlight at the minimum. fluids and a protein bar are a plus too. We all love adventure thats why we do this stuff but most know how to be prepared even for a short ride cause you just never know.

Could things have been done better by both the victim and rescuers absolutely

Also recently I started carrying a whistle in my pack after watching one of those survival shows it carries farther than your voice and takes less effort if your injured

This story of ignoring common sense and being unprepared ultimately contributed to his demise. Was it only me who noticed all the warnings of the incoming storms? It was being called the largest storm in years. A prime example of Darwinism.

Honestly, I read the write up in the paper and I thought that the poor guy made some really bad decisions.
IIRC he just bought the bicycle, and the loop that I saw mapped out is a very, very ambitious route to pedal.
Crazy elevation changes, lot of miles, and, unfortunately, a long way from the nearest help.
God rest his soul, what a shame.

What's that line from Top Gun ... "The Navy regrets to inform you that your son was killed because he was stupid."

It's a bad deal from every side of this.

My wife and I were just discussing this sad story today. What a bummer. I took to heart your advice the last time we rode out there Peter. I would like to say I'm pretty well setup for anything. But you never know.

I know it's after the fact, but why in the fuck could they have not ridden some motorcycles up there to search through the night? He was found right on the Main divide for Christ sakes!

It is a primetime to step up and make it be know that the ADV members are willing to assist in these situations.

If the OCSD, RSD and USFS know that they could have a group of riders who can assist in a moments notice to help find lost folks.

We would have a big impact public opinion on keeping riding trails open.

We can turn this tragedy in to a win win for all forest users.

Seriously. If we'd been made aware we could have had 20 riders up there within an hour, all scratching their heads as to why the real rescuers were calling it "too treacherous". Scary to think that some rain and zero viz makes the Main Divide Rd impassable to the "professionals".

I'm thinking no one was willing to make a decision for fear that it would be the wrong one. I've seen it. Government jobs are secure, as long as you don't loose any team members. The occasional loss of life of a rescuee is almost expected. Sad to say, but I believe it to be true.

Probably true. I bet that most of the SAR guys would have been more than willing to go in looking for him saturday night but the decision makers said no.
