You Meet The Nicest People
On the internet sometimes. Yesterday Freak and I rode to Bedford to the house of the esteemed BWS also of this site. Mr. BW is a K12 RIDER. He also has a great deal of knowledge and I solicited his expertise to solve a pissing fuel problem my K12 has when I fill it up. The symptoms are this: when I fill the tank and shut the fuel filler cap, about a half a gallon of fuel runs out an overflow line right on to the back tire. Luckily I discovered this little anamoly before riding off. Not that I am comfortable enough on the K12 yet that it would cause me any problems. Still, fuel running out the bottom of your bike near the cat can not be a good thing.
After several emails this week a ride down to Bedford was needed to have BW check out my machine. BMW suggested that the canister may be the problem. So, out it came. Then he synched the throttle bodies. He also showed me how to replace the brake fluid in both the front and rear brakes and confirmed that all the recalls had been done to my ride. After we worked on the bike he decided to join us for a ride down the BRP part of the way. We stopped for gas and discovered that the canister was not the cause of the pissing fuel problem. More aggressive solutions to the problem will be required in the future, pull the fuel pump, replace the filter and check the plumbing of the fuel pump was the next step for another day when the right parts were on hand. So we went on our ride. I was in front cruising along at a comfortable 60MPH in a 45 zone when I saw BW had had enough of this leisurely pace and blasted by us and into a sharp left, then right, then left, then right he was just throwing his big K12RS in and out of the turns. Whoever said the K12RS is a pig has never seen BWS ride one. I can only aspire to ride the bike half as well as he rides his. He turns around and heads back and Freak and I continue on our way back to the barn. BRP, 501 to Buena Vista, 631 to Lexington and then out 39 through Goshen Pass. We Turn on 42 and stop long enough to register for a Fund Raiser giving away a Sportster. In all we did about 200 miles of riding and had the opportunity to meet a genuinely nice guy willing to help out a fellow rider even if I am a FNG to the K12. Thanks for the help Mr. BWS look forward the BRPR. Maybe I can lead the Chicken Strip ride! PS. The pissing fuel problem was resolved this morning following the guidance of a fellow K12 rider in England. Barry in UK if you are visiting here, thanks for your help also. The solution, by the way, was to remove the filler tube from the tank and bend the overflow module as high as you could get it and still fit the filler back in the tank. Appears Barry had the same problem on his 97. K12 Sans canister at Goshen Pass Steverino screwed with this post 03-31-2002 at 12:21 PM |

Luckily, my current K doesn't generate enough acceleration to throw fuel out of the overflow. :) |
