Garmin 2610 and Topo

Hey - I just ordered a Garmin 2610 with Mapsource 2008 and also the Topo map DVD. But Garmin just told me the 2610 can't display some of the trails on the Topo DVD.

I searched here and found a few mentions of Topo's but nothing clear about how they work on the 2610. Touratech sells (sold) the lakes and fishing DVD which I think is now discontunued.

Is the Topo DVD any help for fire and logging roads (maaaabe even more?) Is there something better than the topo DVD for offroad stuff on this GPS?

Thanks!

My experience is that the Garmin's Topo maps are out-of-date and spotty for road/trail coverage. Despite the name, City Navigator is about the best for backwoods road networks.

Roads & Rec is not quite as dated as topo, and has somewhat less distracting features, but still many trails, fire roads, etc. It is not routable, so CN still has the edge there. But it does show some features such as streams, etc., which are nice to have as landmarks. I actually like using topo on my 2720 when I'm going on trails at low speeds in the woods. I find it helpful to be able to see the elevation changes to come, and to get a sense where the streambeds and hills lie and what the terrain is going to look like. I have not encountered a problem with the unit failing to display any features on the topo maps.

I was thinking of loading Topo on the 128 CF card that came with the 2610,only the areas I ride offroad.I am going to put Citynav on a 2gb CF card.can I switch the 2 cards and have 2 different setups, one for street and one for offroad?

I use a old version of Garmin Mapsource Topo on my 2610. They will load up on the CF card fine. What you need to do is press 'menu' then click on 'info'. Then go to 'maps'. You'll see City Navigator at the top and below it will be Topo. Uncheck Navigator and it will show the Topo once you go back to the regular screen. Navigator has priority so it will apprear ontop of any other maps.
