Just Another Coastal Trail Ride

Myself and Shannon loaded the bikes into his truck and headed out to our buddy Craig's cabin to do some trail riding with Craig and Steve today. It was a beautiful sunny day for it, a little hot but not enough to stop us from riding one of the best trails in Eastern Newfoundland.

The trail runs from Old Perlican to Kingston, and is part of the old branch line railbed. You can go all the way down to Brigus Junction on the this trail, if you want to. Beyond Kingston the trail runs through the larger communities of Carbonear, Harbour Grace, and Bay Roberts. There's generally too much slow moving ATV traffic in those areas, however. Today there seemed to be a lot of quads on the upper section we usually ride too, unfortunately. Must have met with at least two dozen of them. And it amazes me how many people still don't wear helmets on those things.

Craig and Steve accompanied us down the trail as far as Kingston, and then they rode back to New Melbourne on the coastal highway. But Shannon's bike is not plated, so he and I doubled back and rode the trail all the way back up again. Total distance off road, for Shannon and I, was 90 kms.

We all played around on a crazy monster hill-climb in the Kingston area for awhile. All of us got a little out of shape on a tricky section about half way up. But no one crashed or rolled off the side of the hill. Although Craig gave us all a fright for a second there, as he got completely sideways on the hill.

Thanks again to Craig for his unmatched hopitality. We were offered the use of his shower, given cold beer and wine, and fed a fabulous meal, when we arrived back at his place in New Melbourne, after the ride.

Thanks to Steve for showing us the new and more interesting coastal detour section of the trail.

Here's some snaps from our day spent off road motorcycling in rural Newfoundland...

I'm starting to run out of nearby lighthouses to shoot.

I have visited 26 of them in four months. I have a plan to visit one that's a 950 km dayride away. I'll do that run on the V-Strom, soon, however.

Trust me...

Shannon takes a ribbing from us on a regular basis about his lack of gear.

Apparently he bought a pair of MX pants today, and didn't even swing for the knee pads to go in them.

He paid for not wearing gloves on that ride. His hand were a mass of blisters, after 90 kms of trail riding.
