KTM - 550 - 2smoke
I noticed a few of you out there were pretty knowledgeable regarding KTMs.
Please tell me about a '96 KTM 550 two stroke.
Same edlebrock carb issues? It has the ohlins rear shock. What should I be looking for?

You need to talk to Wayne Weber.
Although you might want to pass on any tire advice that he may offer.
As we age we tend to become more direct in our thoughts and actions.
For me laundry day is no longer Wishy Washy day.

That bike has (should have) a Keihin PWK carburetor on it, Marzocchi 45 Magnum forks and the Ohlins rear shock. Earlier 550's had a D'ellorto, which was also good. The PW carbs weren't as good.....
You can't get pistons any longer for the 550, so I'd make darn sure you've got a good motor. There's been talk of aftermarket ones, but none have surfaced yet that I know of.
The OE pipe is about the best one for the bike, with the exception of one of variants that FMF released (MY07, IIRC) that is no longer available. There's a good brain trust for these old rockets hanging around in KTM Talk.
I have a '95 550, and a couple 440's (same bike, less stroke and bore).
Late model KTM front ends will bolt up to these bikes, but you will have to fabricate and weld steering stops to the steering head of the frame. I am running WP4860's from an '06 450SX on my 550. Lots of parts interchangeability on KTMs.........
