What to take.

Have a flat tire out in the middle of nowhere,no tire changing tools,nothing firm to set stand on,no spare tube??A trick we used to use in Enduros to get back to civilization was to carry about 15 feet of wire,twistable but strong enough and a small vice grip with a cutter,small,easily packable.You CAN ride on a flat front if you're careful(I finished one with a flat front 15 miles out!) but a flat rear nearly impossible and very dangerous full lock swaying that really gets you puckered.Take your wire and go through the spokes and between the knobs and twist tighten as much as you can. Do this every 90 degrees or less,4-6 places.You can now get by to a better place to change your tube,bike will go straight,pull traction,and you may be able to reuse the tire since the bead won't be destroyed.Quite a bumpy ride on the road though!

extra clothes and under wear if needed, all the basic tools for your bike, chain lube, fuses, MSR cooking apparatus,, lighter/waterproof matches.first aid, phone , camera, electronics gadgets if needed,tire plug kit, owners manual, unless you know your bike by heart and worked on it, credit card, cash.tent, sleeping, food if needed.tooth brush and paste.

Good tip, but............if you're going out into the middle of nowhere, the first thing you should pack is what you need to fix your flat tires. Flat tires top the list for most common equipment failure.

I usually don't go out without some drinking water and a pair of running shoes. An hour or two of riding in the backcountry can get you to a place where it would take you two DAYS to walk out.
