Found a 00 model locally with 6k on the clock for around $1300. Supposedly it's been meticulously cared for. Assuming everything is order I might be a SS owner in a couple days.

Any big issues that I'll be able to check out with a fairly quick glance?

I'm just getting into riding, so "just do a test ride" probably help me much.

If it starts and runs smoothly, buy it. That is a great deal and you will love it as you learn to ride. I rode my wife's 2000 all last summer and it really changed the way I now ride a 400. I still ride the SS all over town as it is super fun on the street as well.

The worst that can happen is you hate it and for $1200 invested, you can always turn it over.

The most expensive repair / mod I made was handle bar risers and bark busters. Tires are cheap, no radiators to break. Change the oil and change the air filter often ( I clean and re-oil the stock one and have two on hand - one in the bike and one clean and oiled one in a bag).

Cold start issues are a problem, but do not let that stray you. I start mine up and let it idle while I gear up. When ready, so is the bike.

I was riding last night and my sherpa started to get a hard metallic clunk when stopping . I pulled off the first chance I got and looked it over . It sounded like it was coming from the rear . I checked the rear wheel over , the swing arm and then the shock , every thing all right . Filled up on spaghetti at a dinner then went home , looked it over again and sprayed the mud of every thing . This morning I went out around 5:30 and checked it out and was the front bolt was missing out of rear caliber bracket . So when I hit the brake the caliber was smacking the rotor .Well at lest it was an easy fix , I guess I need to take the bike apart and reassemble it with lock tight . at lest I have a nice long weekend for it lol

I went and looked at it today. Very clean. Has 6700mi on it. Meticulous records kept on all oil/filter changes. Older guy owns it and all of the things in his garage appeared to be very well taken care of....which is a good sign. It was cold (I checked) and it fired right up. I'm not too concerned about cold start issues. But I will need some bar risers.

Any way to raise the seat height a smidge?

Turned carb bowl allen screw and fuel went on the garage floor, as planned.

Then, tried to start, again with no luck. Pushed bike to a down-hill and it fired up when bump-starting. Runs fine whilst on.

Wish the XR650 tap had a 'prime' option on the tap.....that's how I've always started the sherp in the morning, few seconds on prime before pressing the go button.

Anything else to check?

Nice info here. Lots to read.

I also created a Facebook group for the Sherpa, since there was none. Here is the link

I have a 09 that I got from a dealer with 285 miles on it . Did the carb rejetting , started great. At 420 miles the head ate itself . Seems the dealer did the recall to day before he transferred it to the dealer I got it from . Kawasaki covered a new head but now it is a cold blooded beast again.
Checked and cleaned the carb, jets , float level ,slide , checked for air leakes , checked valves- they are on the loose side of spec ,cleaned air filter ,checked timing . Anything else I need to look at ?
Temp high 70's start full choke , let run while putting on gear app 5 minutes . Will not take throttle, bogs ,dies, restart full choke . Finally after 15 minutes of this it will run. Kept in a heated shop , will do it on 10% or pure gas .
Also get a whif of oil smell after riding and it will turn the oil black in 250 miles .
