Saving Space

What have you done to save space in your packing?

First Aid Kit:
Emptied it out of it's (hard) container and put it in a ziploc, then squeezed all the air out.

Tools:
Found a bit driver and got rid of all my torx/allen's - then taped all the bits together. I'm now able to fit all the tools for my bike in the little bitty hatch on my bikes tail rack.

Clothes:
EagleCreek makes packing 'cubes'. 20x14 and will hold up to 16 peices of clothing, folded neatly and packed tightly.

Jackets:

I have a down liner for my moto jacket. I place it inside of my, very thin & lightweight, windbreaker and roll it up. Then I secure it with reflective arm bands. Bungied to my pack, it's waterproof and also allows me to be more visible at night.

Compressed cloths:
Coin towels save an inordinate amount of space. A tube of 10 costs less than $2 and will go through many uses before needing to be discarded. Very strong, 9x15(approx) in size and only take a few drops of water to exapnd them.

I quit using Nalgenes all together. Too bulky, instead I switched to a MSR Dromedary bag. Clips/straps to the top of my bags, holds a gallon of water, can use optional shower attachement, and has even worked as a camp pillow at the end of the day. Same wide mouth as nalgenes when cap is taken off.

Space saving is not something I take lightly.
Less is better.

All of you that have homes and places to keep stuff just don't get it.

Y'all have an assortment of different stuff, depending on length and destination, you get to pick and choose what goes on that particular trip.

I don't have that luxury, I'm loaded with everything that I need to spend the rest of my life on the road.

Hi Jay

I've got about 80% less stuff than I've ever had in my life. Where I'm not even close to where you are, I'm certainly learning about what's really necessary and what's not.

Where are ya these days? Gonna come out to the rockcrawl?

I'm proud of you Heidi, really hasn't been easy for you to weed it down to what really matters. LR, I'm sure has helped, he doesn't take squat.

No rockcrawl for me , headed to the PNW wet fest, looking forward to hangin' with the gang up north.

Thanks

And, yeah - it's been tough, but very fun and unbelievably enlightening. Bob's hasn't helped, but more so a huge influence. I've only ever asked him once to carry something of mine... and it's only been because it was left out after I'd already packed up the bike while on the road.

I'm no slacker!

P.S. Our (So Cal) event isn't until the 22-23, so if you see your way down this way, we'd love to see ya.

You'd be able to have more worthless "stuff" if you'd settle down and get an RV or something....gosh...

You are correct though, I pack differently for each trip depending on destination & length of the trip. I've got different stoves, stuff sacks, clothes and sleeping bags all dependent on trip conditions. (Note: I said trip conditions, not Trip conditions...for Trip conditions, I just bring an open mind and my camera ).

I'm kinda at a crossroads in my homelife...I'd be pretty satisfied with getting rid of about 2/3 of the shit I have in my small house, but alas I come from a long line of packrats, and its not easy changing whats genetically instilled in someone...

Picking books would be hard. However, I can put full books on an SD card and use my PDA phone to read them.

No, but the program that reads them can.

Change your 'consumables' into 'semi permanents' ...

eg tissues => hankies
paper towels => chux or tea towels

Things you would throw out become things you keep for a while - they take less room as you don't need as many .. also reduces the shopping.

Also talk to the bicyclist .. they really pack small!

--------------------------------
Ask jkam about cloths pegs - think it was him I told about them .?
