Getting dirty in New Mexico!

About 2 years ago I rode to northern N.M. on my Goldwing. It was my first trip into this part of our country. I was rewarded with stunning views of the lovely scenery but I thought I was missing out on the really good stuff. Every time I passed a dirt road it beckoned with a promise of even better scenery. I attempted to explore 1 road on my GW, but a heavily laden antique bike with street tires had me turning around rather quickly. I vowed to return someday with a machine capable of taking me down the highway and down the forest roads.

My trusty old Goldwing on Hollman Hill.

I sold my Golwing to my Dad after the trip and purchased a nice used 97 F650 from a friend at work. I named her Sauscony. After fixing her up a bit and saving some money for the trip. I was finally ready to return to N.M. and explore some of the roads previously unaccesible on the wing. I made some soft luggage out of some cheap backpacks, spooned on some knobbies, and headed for Tucumcari. I left the camping gear at home so I could carry lots of water. Getting across Texas was going to be a hot ride! Here she is loaded and ready to go.

I didn't take alot of pics going across Texas. Not much to see in this part of the state. It was damn hot! I thought I was carrying too much water at first. I was wrong. 8 liters was perfect. Plenty to drink, with some left for pouring over my head. Had to stop for a burrito and a shirt soaking.

I rode along old route 66 for awhile and stopped at this old gas station in Vega that featured shade! Hard to find shady spots out there. Also saw a wind farm in the distance, the first I've ever seen. The pic didn't come out all that great, but it was kinda cool to see them in the distance. Thier size must be quite impressive.

Holed up in Tucumcari for the night. Got this room for 35 bucks. Not bad!

After a very boring day1 heading toward Las Vegas from Tucumcari was a real treat. The roads were nice and the temps got lwer as the day went on. I ran into this burned pasture and decided to stop for a pic.

Going up Hollman hill. I love this road. Compared to the roads around my home, this is moto heaven. Lots of curves and beautiful views. Yess!

I was using a cheap motel in Taos as my base for the week. wasn't much daylight left when I arrived so I went on a short ride down the closest forest road I could find. I found a little mud but the road was fairly smooth in most places, which meant I could go really fast. Riding without a buddy, I carried all of my survival gear and tried to feel out the bikes handling, as this was my first trip off the pavement with this bike. It's no dirtbike, but i was very impressed with it's handling. The hardpacked road was a perfect place to get aquainted with my new steed and found myself going faster and faster as I progressed. I tried (and failed) to keep it under 40mph. The smooth dirt and gentle curves were big fun! Here's a few pics from this first foray into the dirt.

There was still some daylight left and I was thinking about trying another road, but it looked like a storm was coming and I didn't want to get caught alone in the dark on umfamiliar dirt roads so I headed back to Taos.

My room in Taos. Cost me just over 200 bucks for a week. Not the nicest place, but I could afford it. I had enough stuff for extremely primitive camping, but it rained every evening while I was there. I was very glad I was able to sleep indoors.

Now the drama starts. I knew the bike would be affected by the altitude. Since my Goldwing didn't suffer any ill effects other than some power loss, I didn't think rejetting the carbs would be necessary. The weather man said it was going to rain every afternoon for the next 5 days, so I got up with the sun and loaded the bike, which refused to start. I tried everything I could think of yet Soz refused to light off. Every now and then she would start for a moment and then die. Here I am staring at my dear Soz, wondering what i've done to piss her off. Altitude sickness. Has to be.

Later after it warmed up a bit she finally started and ran poorly until she warmed up. Running too rich.

Finally out on the forest road, much later than planned. Iwas a little concerned about the starting problem so I made sure to keep the engine warm. All of the roads I would be riding would be even higher than Taos. As long as she was warm, she didn't give me any trouble.
