LAfter dropping the DRZ numerous times on Sunday, I took Pete's suggestion and stripped most of the unnecessary weight off while it is still road legal. Still need a fender eliminator kit or a homemade substitute, and some barkbusters.

It was fitting of Andrew, friend and co-worker, to ride to work today because I'm handing the "are you nuts?" title over to him. Good kid, we pedal, run, ride, kayak together but no longer work together. He's also taking over part of my job, Cartographer.

He even waited almost 30 minutes past quitting time to escort my pokey butt home. Of course, he had to video me trying to start my 640 after the battery failed to crank out the required amps. kick kick kick kick kick.....

Awesome Michael, that's got to feel good

Congrats on the retirement Mike.

Tom, how bad is the drz exhaust? I easily saved 10-15 pounds on the 650 by swapping the muffler. I'm sure there's more that can be trimmed off the drz.

Now, maybe, you're seeing why I wanted to run 3 setups on the 650. Dirt, commuter, and trip. The trick is to keep it down to minimum prep time between. I think I can keep it to 6 bolts tops,10 if you swap a tank. Should be 30 mins total with a tank swap from one extreme to the other.

I have read up a lot on the exhaust. On the DRZ doesn't seem like the big investment yields much. I have a jet kit to be installed, never did that before. Now that the Gman's retired I will be bugging him to help me with this stuff. First comes the doohickey though.

Michael congratulations!! Now when you get caught up on some of your projects let me know. I have a few you can help me with . Everyone I know who has been able to go "early" says the same thing," I don't know how I got anything done before, because I spend all day doing things now."

So it's fairly light and flows pretty well stock then?

Have you ever cleaned a carb before Tom? Most times the kits are very easy. IIRC you'll need to drill the slide and change the weight in them. I'd also highly suggest a fcr upgrade. It can be done for $200 most times so don't let the 640 or so price tag on websites fool you with the new carb prices. You still need to try my Dr out to just feel the difference that carb makes alone. The tm40 is another good choice then the stock being well sorted comes close mid to top end,but the accelerator pump is the gem on the bottom end of these carbs.

After you install your kit its just modifying from there. It'll take riding it to sort it out. Most of the time its idle and fuelscrew adjustments. Or raising/lowering the needle in the main. No biggie,it just seems like it is. If you're paranoid, err twards being rich.

Thanks guys, It won't sink in until I don't have to get up for work. I already suspended the alarm on my phone. Andrew videotaped my departure and edited it into a cool story. I'll see if I can download it from my FB page.

Thomas, The DRZ muffler isn't too bad, Slammer tried to modify his and put it back to stock, the noise wasn't worth the tiny gain.

I can show you how to dissect your carb and show you around inside and how to adjust the fuel screw/idle.

Think twice about removing your tail rack, it does 2 things, a place to strap a bag and something to grab when picking up the bike.

My suggestions for your DRZ are simple, make it fit you, set up the suspension correctly and ride the hell out of it. All of the motor hop ups in the world can't replace experience or skill.

Remember; practice, practice, practice...

What size bars are on the DRZ? The hand guards I have are set up for 1 1/8 bars. I'm still looking for the spacers to fit the 7/8 bars.
