I killed my two C battery Maglight by knocking it off my shoe. The batteries were stuck (I'm assuming that one of the batteries burst), so I tried dropping it once or twice, then was tapping off my foot for a minute or two, not hard but fast, and the internal plastics holding the bulb in place shattered. The battery never came out. Earlier, I had the spare bulb shattered from sitting in my glove box for a few months. I tossed the light and bought a $5 POS that'll serve good enough for my purposes.

I have a Streamlight Scorpion and a surefire G2. Both are bargains at $30-40 anywhere.

But my EDC light is a Cabela's knockoff of a surefire aviator--LED + xenon. 50 lumens on xenon, long battery life on LED, it comes in several color choices for the LED's.

Cabelas has a good selection of flashlights, I saw this 1300 lumin light there, yes 1300 lumin which I would think could burn holes in sheetrock.

Then they have one of the little nine volters, which can also strobe for emergency purposes , beside the normal constant on.

Bit of a flashlight geek. I carry an HDS Ultimate 60 and Jetbeam MK II.

Do it all light if you can live with A123s.

Otherwise Fenix L1P or L2P for 1 or 2 AA batts:

+1 on the Fenix P2D - I have one with the Cree XRE LED and it is, for its size, the dog's doodads. They do it with the new Luxeon Rebel LED which is by all accounts even brighter.

There is a Fenix L2D on the bike - a little bigger, just as bright, runs on ordinary AA cells not lithium CR123s.

I've used this supplier a great deal and always found them excellent. Annoyingly, they're yanks.

I've switched over to using a headlamp for virtually everything. It's waterproof with an LED bulb.

For big distance light, a Surge.

Princeton Tec has outstanding customer service. An email to them resulted in them sending me free replacement parts for another headlamp I used to have.

Great info!

I've always had a weird addiction to MagLites (most LEOs I knew years ago carried them), with several D-cell, AA (a few converted to LED), and now a C-cell torch. Seems you can never have too many flashlights (glove boxes, tool kits, emergency packs, backpacks, under the bed, etc). As VelvtRide points out - the bigger ones also double as a nice weapon too (if I can't get to the "other" one).

Somehow I've ended up with about 30 C-cell batteries and will be picking up a few more that use that type. Not too common though... It would be nice to find a C-cell LED.

Fenix lights. From single AAA to dual CR123 models. The new versions pack up to 200 lumens (read: BRIGHT!) in a 5 inch tube of HA anodized alum. Digital multimode too. Not exactly commodity prices but more affordable than Surefire. Not sure we need Surefire's legendary robustness though.

Good prices from lighthound.com and fenixstore.com

The safelites (pictured a few posts above) make a great secondary/all purpose lite. Virtually indestructible and 9v can be found just about everywhere.

Buy one get one free at edcdepot.com

I also stick a microlight on my bike key for convenience. These are really useful and uber-affordable.

$6 shipped for 10.

Yes. You read correctly. $0.60 each at dealextreme.com. Buy 1 and give the 9 away. It's always a crowd fav.

Just plugging some lights I'm currently using and find useful. No relation to any links posted.

Oh yes, for those EDC geeks out there: edcforums.com. Great stuff for and by likeminded ppl.

Nice flashlights there VR.

An A2 Aviator is what i use for camping. LEDs are bright enough for camp work. The std. bulb give almost as much light at a E2. Good for exploring mines and whatnot.

Surefire makes an excellent light, very pricey though. Proprietary batteries on some models keep them being expensive.

Maglites are dinosaurs, there are plenty of small LEDs that throw off as much light as a Mag without weighing a ton. Too big to pack and carry extra batteries.

The Surefires are great. I own a few of them(9P, A2, E2) but if you're on a budget the Streamlight Scorpion at about $35 is hard to beat.

My EDC(every day carry) is the famous CMG Infinity Task Light. Once issued to the U.S. Military, it runs over 40 hours on a single AA battery.
