520s On All The Time?

So I did my first ride with the new lights today. Here's my question. Is it ok to leave them on all the time, or is it too much work for the electrical system? I like the added visibility for the cars out there. Also, if I add fog lights, is it better on the system to only run one pair of lights at a time (fog or driving lights). I don't think that it would be good to run the 520s in fog anyways.

Thanks,

Errin

I have a 2001 GS and run my LF170s which use more juice than your PIAAs. I have had no problems. They have been installed for about 1 month - if the bike is running, they are burning.

Good luck,
Barry

520's on

Errin

From one of my posts try this if you want to monitor output . This is just a paste over from my larger post

First of all to keep track of my numerous electrial accesories and how things are flowing I have just installed

http://www.electricalconnection.com...dicators/bm.htm

This is way cool and the LED just fits down in the lower corner of my dash below my speedo. Green is good. The guys at my dealership were tres grande impressed and are ordering in some to sell to other bikes that might be electricallly challenged.

Then I take you didn't get the ion crystal 520 fogs then.

The 520 driving put out 85w thru a light diffusing crystal ion lens (YELLOW) that allows them to be DOT approved for highway use. They are too bright to run with oncoming traffic at night. So, a handy power switch is a must. You can run the 520 driving with oncoming traffic during the day. You can pretty much run the 520 fogs all the time.

We just received our first shipment of PIAA 525s. We're going to mount a set and get some use experience with them.

Initial impressions:

* They are the same diameter as the 520s
* They are deeper then the 520s
* They have a very nice mount system, somewhat similar to the old 910s
* There are two separate relays (small form factor) and fuses. This is much smaller then the 520 relay/fuse combo.
* As mentioned, there is a small running light bulb and a standard H4 bulb to provide high/low beam use
* A nice 2 button switch
* You can replace the bulb without tools
* They must be mounted upright only and are 1 inch taller then the 520's

It's great to have an integrated fog and driving light output from a single pair of lights.

I'll post some on bike pictures shortly.

Here's what the kit looks like:

Damn - that is nice. Fog/driving. Course a bike with 17 lights instead of 2 looks geekier.

Your LightForce 170's are brighter and provide fog/driving in a pair also. With the 1-fog and 1-driving geek mode capability too!

Fogs. On all the time. Nary a problem.

Chuck,
If you pop the fog lens on the 170's, could they be run:

a) during the day with oncoming traffic?
b) at night with oncoming traffic?

It would then be easy enough to pull the fog lens off when riding in less populated areas at night.

BCGS,

The answers are "yes" to both a) and b) with qualification.

LightForce sells 2 types of lenses for their lights, one lens with minimal light bending (?) and a second lens style that diffuses the light. They offer both lens types in a variety of colors to match whatever fingernail polish color you want to match on any given day. :) Note: some lens colors are not DOT approved (amber for instance).

The 170's are large lights that put out 110w per light.

a. yes, although you could with a disbursing lens on the 170's

b. yes (maybe) when you dial the lights into a fog light pattern

The LightForce lights require a proprietary light bulb. The 140's put out 85w a side. And are smaller then PIAA 520's.

Perhaps Barry can share his experience riding with the 170's lit up, at night, with oncoming traffic.

Yes, I can... but first - WHAT THE HELL are the black covers in the pic ???????

As for the lights. I have run mine both diffused and pencil beem with a clear, non-prismatic cover. I aimed them so they hit JUST below my high beem. I run them on 24 x 7. Day, night, oncoming, no oncoming. I have not been flashed yet, and I probably have 2000 miles on the lights. Maybe less, but more than 1000 miles. When I ride to work - it is dark. I'm behind / beside a fair amount of cars. Nobody gives me "the look".

I am sold. They rock - and they throw tons of light out in front, and to the side.

I can't imagine if you aimed them high and used them only as driving lights how far they would throw light out in front of you.

I'll report when I run the prismatic / fog covers - yellow ones.

Barry

Re: 520s On All The Time?

hi Errin!

it's not clear from your post which 520s you have; the 520 Fogs, or the 520 Driving lights..?

FWIW, there should be no problem driving either set of these with the oilhead electrical systems; unlike in the old Airhead days, there's ample power available from these things.

as for on all the time? i use my yellow 520 Fogs on all the time, day or night for conspicuity, and even have the high beam on in the day time; i just have the 520s adjusted to where the beam pattern from them is slightly lower than the low beam cut-off. the scatter from them is still significant enough that they're damn hard to miss, but never forget that you're invisible anyway.

cheers!
