how to determin TDC on 98 KTM Adv <valve adj.>

so let the wisdom flow. I'm ready to undertake doing my own valve adjustments on my 98 Adv but can't seem to find an easy way to determin T(op)D(ead)C(enter)? There's a glass site window on the right side of the engine case but the shop manual refers to it as an "Ignition point(SEM)" and doesn't make any clear reference
as to what these "points" coincide to, TDC, ATDC, etc.

Is the easiest solution just to watch the rise and fall of the valves and catch it on the high point or is there a more precise method?

Also what other special tools will make this job easier other than a shorty 5mm allen and a 45 degree set of metric feeler gauges?

For those that have done this before do I need to disconnect the "decompression lever cable" or
can I slack it back enough to remove the valve cover and can I remove the vavle cover without disconnecting the valve cover to frame vent line? Big TIA to those that can provide some insight.
