I've had this pic for years. Would love to build one just like it some day... The torque would be unreal in the dirt.

I had an XS 650 in 1973. Rode that bike EVERYWHERE. Lots of desert stuff, hillclimbs and hard roads. I've got a pic somewhere around here of me with this bike. If I can find it, I'll post it up. Nice, reliable motor w/ good torque. I think it would make a pretty decent dual sport motor and wouldn't have any trouble running at superslab speeds either. Might be a little heavy, but look at the lbs. on that new 650 KLR!

Even with the heavier engine, I don't think it'd even be close. The magazines put he new KLR at 37HP 32 Ft llbs of torque.

From the web..
Quote:
Model Yamaha XS 650 F 1979
Power 54.8 hp (408.6 kW) @ 7000 rpm, Torque 58 Nm (42.8 ft. lbs) @ 5500 rpm
And that's box stock which it wouldn't be when I got through with it.. Damm it would be a fun bike to build...

Yz650

I started to build one using an '89 XT 600 set of forks....ended up selling to a good friend who has takin over the reigns........
This was my plan, but adding a "Baja Design" kit instead of the stock parts for legality, and to keep it light.....

Keep in mind the motor weighs approximately 135 lbs and Champion frames
are great, but these motors vibrate and more so in the lighter Champion frames
