In the process of bringing over my third Aprilia, only now to find out that they now are jumping on the band wagon, wanting to charge $150 for the clearance letter, they are calling it a processing fee, and the funny thing in the reply email to me, they said there records show the bike you currently want to purchase has no recalls against it, you would think they could have just sent that to me on a letter head and be done with it. WTF.....

KTM Recall Clearance Letter

I contacted a US dealer in the past to get a recall clearance document and he didn't even know what this was.

At that time, I crossed the border anyways to learn that KTM Canada charges 500$ to issue such document.

I'm about to import another bike and wanting to bypass trial and error, calling one dealer and another, I'd like to know:

Which US Dealer would you guys refer me to to get a recall clearance letter.

Regards

Alex

Get the owner of the bike you are buying to get the letter from his dealer. They cannot refuse to give it to him. That's what I did when I bought my 950 in Seattle.

I have had three very different experiences with three different bikes imported from the States:

08 KLR 650 bought new in San Diego - Kawasaki US head office very helpful, faxed me a copy of the letter that day, followed up with a mail copy - NO CHARGE

05 Ducati 749S bought on ebay from guy in FLA - I investigated all options including asking PO to get letter from dealer, they wouldn't do it, Ducati N.A forbids dealers to do this. Only option left was paying Canadian dealer $500, ouch.

'75 Ducati 860GT bought on ebay, from CA - no $200 RIV fee, no requirement for a recall clearance letter, because bike is over 15 years old, sweet!

Importing a '83 model BMW

Has anyone had any experience importing a bike of this vintage? Specifically, do you require a recall letter and does it have to go through the usual Can Tire inspection?

Thanks,

LVGS

But the seller can refuse to sell the bike to me if it's too much of a hassle.

I asked another dealer and he too do not know what is this document.

Anybody have an example of what the KTM letter should look like?

It just has to be a letter from KTM showing that there are no outstanding recalls. Explain this to the dealer and you won't have any problems. Since its a used bike, ask the seller to do it as a requirement for you to purchase....he's a fellow rider, I always find them most reasonable. He likely has a relationship with a dealer.

According to RIV, they need a letter from the head office or a printout from the dealer's vehicule database which I received but it is plain text, no logo.

I'll try with a letter from a dealer and we'll see.

I've done this several times. It is just a computer printout, its not on letterhead....but needs to be from the manufacturer, not the dealer. The dealer just provides the printout....It sounds like you have what you need.

What he said. All you need from the dealer is a "Vehicle History Report."

I do believe the report needs to state something like "No Outstanding Recalls" or "All Campaigns Up to Date". The important part is that RIV needs to know that any recalls have been performed prior to allowing the import.
