Probably 99.5% of flattracker XL350s are either '74-75 sideport bikes or '76-78 centerport bikes, with the '74-75 being probably the more common. Sideport/centerport refers to the geometry of the intake port. The bike in the pic is a sideport, and is actually starting to look pretty handsome considering what it looked like the first time KawFreak raced it, maybe what is it two years ago now? Maxed out one of these engines can be bored and stroked out to just shy of 500cc and eek past 50hp.

Hi James, just thought I would let you now that you are not the only one out there that has/had this idea. Mine will be a 7R replica of sorts for the street and track days, also a DR650. I do have an AJS in boxes, but want something fun and Estart to ride that looks somewhat vintage. anybody can buy a new retro bike, but I like the idea of rolling my own. JB

I saw one here in town recenly done by Bare Bones Machine that had been bored and stroked to 500cc. It had an external oil line to the head because the bore was so big it obstructed the internal oil passage.

Thanks for the XL350 info. I briefly considered building one, but I think I have too much on my plate right now. So here is one from VFT that I found recently if anyone's interested:

Honda XL350

I have a 1976 Honda XL 350 with a clean title. I'm a new rider and I thought this would be a good first bike for me, but it just hasn't worked out like I planned.The bike was running on a daily basis up until about a month ago, but now I can't get it started at all. I don't know what's wrong with it. I've decided to cut my losses so I can find something else, with electric start, that's better suited for me. This bike needs someone mechanically inclined who has experience with vintage motorcycles. Austin Texas

Hmmm...I will be very interested to hear how that one does. Trackmaster vs Champion frame but, otherwise very similar.

THAT is awesome! I had a spare TL engine kicking around the garage for a few years, with the intention of doing just that... a custom framed street tracker. Lovely

Make regular visits to VTR [Vintage Flat Tracker} and check the for sale section. At least a couple of shops made frames for the SV-TL TLR DL motors and occaisionally they come up for sale.
Quickest way to an awesome street-tracker.

I'm sure it's waaay out of my price range, but... BOOKMARKED!

I had a TLR and loved the engine, hated the frame/suspension.
