Thumb 3 days of unemployment or last good riding before child #2 and winter

I'm between jobs (no really, I've got 3 days off between leaving my last job and starting a new one on Monday) and got the green light to schedule in some riding. The weather isn't great, so I changed my plans a few times, but Day 1 of unemployment was superb.

Day1: Yes, I can hear the peanut gallery already...an interesting ride report from Manitoba?
Well, It was for me.

Ya, I know it, there's no curvy roads and it's flat.

There's a stocked trout pond about 45 minutes from Winnipeg. I go there time to time to mtb bike or fish. I went there on Father's day to do both with my buddy.

Pictures from a much nicer, sunny summer day

But this is today

We did some exploring and came across an old gravel pit. Today I figured I'd explore a bit more, because we could only do so much last time with the mtb bikes.

This must be crown land now, cause there's shotgun shells everywhere. A bunch of the lakes have trails around them.

Lake Tahoe of the north. This must be left-over from Spring Break activities.

There's trails and sandpits all around the area. Better for quading, but it wasn't too bad riding the pig either.

There's a dead goose hanging out the bottom of this contraption. We figure it was shot and just happened to land in it. It's neck and head was hanging out at Father's day, now just the body and feet.

Pic from Father's day:

And this was today

A nice trail brought me to my first coffee stop

Wonder who left this here?

and why doesn't she have a head?

I downloaded some quading tracks which indicated there was a shack 3km down this trail. I walked across, but didn't want to dig myself out with the bike. I thought long and hard during my 2nd coffee stop. Gonna have to come back during dryer times.

It wasn't warm, it as spitting a little, but this little gem of a trail made it all worth it.

Artsy

Eventually got to a gravel road and headed North. Followed some faint trails and came to this.

I queued up the hillbilly music in my head and returned to my bike. I lost my breath thinking about facing a couple rifles while looking up to this:

Nobody's home, but the chairs are there

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I assume they are bear baiting?

It now became a game to see who had the nices hunting space.
I found many more

Hey Billy-Bob, I got one in the open!

This one was real stinky...I betcha he got all the good bears

I'm not sure if it was the smell or what, but I started to get jumpy and wanted OUT! I start to leave and the bike dies. WHAT? Don't tell me the kickstand jumper dealy is biting me now. I knew I should have got around to rewiring it.

Restarted...stall
Restarted...stall
Restarted...stall
Restarted...backfire...stall
DAMMIT.
Well, I'm gonna puke if I stay here with the smell, let's just walk it back to the road and figure it out. CLUNK...my foot hits the kickstand...It was down the whole time.
Restart...roost Outta here.

Those are some very cool and very eerie pics. Enjoy your unemployment.

I was going with some kind of air-boat, like the kind you might see in the Florida everglades...only sans motor.

Really creapy pix, I love it!

The red thing looks similar to a contraption I couldn't pass up at an auction I went to a year ago. You put a small outboard on the back and stand with one leg on each pontoon. We call it "The Jet Ski Of Death".

I don't hunt, but I believe it's called bear baiting. Hunter's create the stinkiest pile of "food", and the bears will find it from miles around. Hunters wait in their tree, and BLAMMO when the bear comes for his treat. That's the only reason I can think of why the barrels were tied to the trees, so the bears don't run off with them when the hunters are away.

Or maybe just lazy hunters not cleaning up their kill?
