Thanks Hank

That picture at the beginning of the thread just solidified my reasons for buying a 2012 GSA. While mine had only the minimal break-in mileage of 600 miles it now has almost 3000 miles in just 2weeks of riding and I must say this bike really does beg to be ridden and puts a grin on my face every time.

Very happy to see such solid performance out of this bike and I look forward to many years of it.

Thanks for the great reading,

I'm looking for an adventure bike and found a well cared 1997 gs 1100 with 45000m (78000klm). I'll pay it a visit today and will look with new eyes at it. I don't want to get the newer gs as all the electronics just don't fit in my mind with adventure riding. I already have a k16gt and the wife's f800s for modernity and my ols r100/7 for keeps me happy as well.

Again thank you.

Many people use Mobil 1 15/50 or 20/50 for GS motorcycles. I did.

if this is the synthetic mobil 1 15/50 for motorcycles than it's the same i'm using for my 1150 gs. Been happy with it, no leaks or consumption.

No, not motorcycle specific Mobil 1. Just the correct viscosity.

PS, I hope this doesn't turn into an oil thread.

Mobil 1

So Mobil 1 is good for cars and motorcycles ? there is not a specific Mobil 1 for motorcycles right?
I saw a Costco at a very good price.

There is, but you do not need it on the air cooled BMW!

You will want to take a long test ride to make sure the transmission does not jump out of gear. Ask to see the final drive oil too. You may already know this but...

Bought my 97 R1100GS with 59K in Nov of last year and have put about 5K miles on it since. I have also put about $2K dollars into so I wouldn't get that back if I decided to sell it. I have spent a lot of time doing all of the maintenance that had been neglected on it done and upgrading those things that need it like SS brake lines, engine guards, TT hard parts and shocks. The rear shock just blew out the other day and so I had to spend time and money I could ill afford to find/buy a used set of Ohlins for it. I ride it every day come rain or shine unless the bike is down for repairs. I can only hope that I get 400K out of it but I am going to do all I can to try and get to that level.

Almost

Not at 500K yet but, I am getting close. I'm working too much and haven't had a chance to ride.
After a lot if staring a the map for a long time I've decided to accomplish my 500k miles in Africa. I am trying to get my bike ready for the trip and shipping. The plan is to ship the bike out in mid March to Cape Town and I follow a month later. The rough plan is to ride as far north as I can, hoping to get to Kenya. Some how I have to make up the last 10k miles but, I also want it to be a journey, not just a trip to rack up miles. It will be a solo trip for the most part.
Anybody is welcome to tag along for an hour, a day or longer. For me the schedule its going to be dependent on time, money, weather and all the other items that come along with a trip like this. My GS and I have seen so much of the country roll past us its hard to believe that its been almost half a million miles ago.

With the oil, yes its the regular 15/50 Mobil One.

Damn, I have been dreaming of an Africa trip but I don't see any way that I could swing it either financially or time wise. If I could tho it would be two R1100GS' rolling through the African savanna.

Almost There

I'm in East London, South Africa, headed for Cape Town. My mileage on my trusty GS is 499333.
I'm almost there.....
