Late October Lighthouse Hunting

The forecast was predicting warm weather in most of Newfoundland today, so I couldn't resist a jailbreak ride to hunt down a few more lighthouses on the Bonavista Peninsula.

The weather was cold this morning, with the thermometer in my shed showing a brisk 2 degrees Celsius, as I rolled the bike out and headed up on the highway. There was frost on the rooftops and on car windscreens as I pulled away. Let's just say I was glad I had my Helly Hansen thermal underwear on.

Temperatures warmed up pretty nicely by midday, for this time of year, at least. So I cracked the whip and headed up to King's Cove, to ride the trail out to the headland, where the lighthouse is located. The trail is much rougher than it used to be, thanks to being washed-out by a several summer rain storms. But my Metzeler Tourance rear tire seemed to hook up surprisingly well on the loose and rocky trail. Not bad for a touring tire, I suppose. The Strom is no knobby-shod DRZ400, but it can get you through some relatively nasty stuff, if you're determined enough to try it.

After making my way back out the short 2 km lighthouse trail, I took Route 235 back to Route 230, and then picked up Route 233 to go grab a photo of the lighthouse in Musgravetown. After that I continued on to Port Blandford, and finally rode Route 1 back to the City of St. John's, from there.

Total riding distance for the day was 590 kms.

Here's a map...

Here's some photos from my little autumn dayride adventure...

DRZ... Your pics are always great, as is the too-short narrative. Wonderful stuff, as is pretty much everything you guys post over at ridetherock.com!

Thanks, guys...

It was a great way to spend a Tuesday, late in the year, knowing there won't be many more such perfect riding days left.

Rob...

Mike and I are both tied at 30 Newfoundland lighthouse trophy photo points, each. We've been busy. I put 14,000 kms on the Strom, hunting lighthouses down across the island, just this year.

Here's a great resource about the lighthouses of Newfoundland and Labrador, if anyone is interested in seeing how many there are, and where...

John...

You hold the honour of having the most number of lighthouse trophy photo points of all the non-resident 'Ride The Rock' forum members. 6 points is mighty impressive, considering how little time you've spent here, compared to the rest of us locals.
