"Lawn Gylint" ride...

Had a ride out to the east end of Long Island. Good fun except for a stiff crosswind. Unwanted lane changes are just no fun. These first few pics are from the ony legal dirt road worth riding on the island. If anybody knows of more please let me know.

This means no fun past this sign

Here's an actual intersection listed on the map

Sand is no fun on a big Strom. MUCH foot dabbing. I really must have looked like a twit tap dancing across the sand. Ever see someone just learning to ride a bike? Yup that was me. Much different than my old XR80 when I was young.

Some more from the dirt. Now I know that this is nothing compared to what most of you people ride, but I have to work with what I got.

here's the Shinnecock canal locks. They are open (why?) and the water rushes by at a pretty good clip. Boats going upstream through the canal are nearly on plane. Try as I might to get the bike in the picture, it just would'nt float.

Here's a windmill. I guess it mills in the wind. Looks old. Smells old. Must be pretty old.

Neat old tractor on one of the numerous farm stands.

Old cemetary and another windmill. Graveyard is from late 1700's early 1800's. Windmill was built 1803. A fair amount of history out here.

Arrived at this place with a full bladder and an empty belly. Found out it is something of a celebrity hangout. My girlfriend saw Matthew Broderick there. It's called "The Lobster Roll" but the locals call it "Lunch". I was tired from fighting the wind all day and it felt good to sit inside for a bit. A standard burger and fries later I was back on the road.

Got to Montauk Point Lighthouse along with a ton of fat fendered hotrods. I did'nt want to pay the $6 parking fee for a few quick pics so I stole one from the no parking area. The lighthouse was built in 1792 under George Washington. No longer occupied since coming under the USCG's control. All automated.

On the way back I found a random M-60 tank behind a flashy restaurant. Odd place for a tank you ask me.

Just a sign that says "Bridgehampton settled 1656" That's before the USA was the USA.

Finally here's me in front of the world famous "Big Duck". Just a gift shop selling big duck stuff. I don't get it but it is listed as a historic place so I figured I needed to get a pic of it.

All in all a good ride. About 200 miles, one tank of gas. Wind beat the hell out of me but it was better than all the rain we had the past few days.
Thanks for reading

Lobster Roll!

I've had a few road trips end with catching the sunrise out there at Montauk.
Did a fair amount of camping at Hither Hills - Lunch was a regular stop.

Lawn Guyland has some crazy rules about who can drive where. I know the surf fisherman can run on the beaches - can a guy take a bike out there?

There used to be a jeep trail that you could pickup just past the Lobster Roll that would take you up and over the moraine to the bay. I used to see jeeps and what not driving it and along the shore on the bay side. Still a bunch of gravel roads out there that the Strom should be happy on.

No, bikes are not allowed on the beaches. The four-wheelers need a permit, porta-potty, hi-lift jack, jack boards, a means for deflating and inflating tires, and fishing gear for everyone in the truck. My girl works for the park system and has alot of funny pics of people getting stuck on the beach. The best ones are the trucks that get stuck at low tide. High tide comes in and......

P.S. I would to see any pics of your xs650 project if you have any. I have a 78 xs and was thinking of the same thing.
