Oh Percocet, how do i love thee..

That was amazing

Last Saturday, I managed to shatter my right tibial plateau in a low speed low-side on a Suzuki DR-350. Pretty much the bike fell on my knee. Surgery on Sunday to fix the bones and again on Wednesday to close the wound with a skin graft. Up until Friday morning, I had the morphine happy button to control the pain but stopped using it in order to get used to oral pain meds before being discharged on Saturday.

At 12:30 AM Saturday the pain began to increase and I was given 2 Percocets. I went to sleep a short while later, still in pain. I awoke at 2:30 and I felt nothing. No pain in my leg. No feeling of the bed pressing up against me. Neither hot nor cold. Usually I can feel my heart beating in my chest but that was gone, too. Unbelievable calm.

For a minute I began to panic, thinking I might have died.

The whole week, I kept wondering what the big deal was with morphine. Sure it did a great job with the pain, but not much else. But I fully understand how someone could addicted to Percocet.

i just took a cuople of more a few minutes ago, so nighty night.

Pic of the skin graft.

vicoden, percocet, oxycontin...

Last year I shattered my left radius. Seven pins and a week in the hospital later, I was hooked on oxycontin, oxycodon, vicoden, and percocet. These drugs are your friend.

But it took me until the end of July to get off of them. I was hooked bad from September 9 until June 26. I couldn't get off them until I changed my venue- basically by going for a three week ride. I'd gotten off them a few times but never for more than a couple of weeks.

A few weeks ago I fell again- right on my left elbow. HUGE bruise but nothing broke. The pins in the head of my radius broke a while ago. When I fell a few weeks ago, I took a vicoden at night for three nights in a row. Then I stopped and I'm still sober. Whew.

IMHO, don't worry about getting addicted- you're already dependent on them and there's nothing you can do about it unless you want to actually feel the pain. Once the pain is gone- that's when you can worry about being addicted.

Get well soon!

One of my nurses told me "You can't get addicted while you're still in pain."

I'm not too worried about addiction. Once the 'script runs out, usage will stop. But I can certainly understand how someonw might get hooked.

Ouch, that sucks! I dropped a GSXR on my knee a few years ago, and almost tore my MCL in the process. Percocet for that too. That's when I discovered that I don't like narcotics much, as they make me all out of whack. They do wonders for the pain though, so if it's severe enough I will take some and be happy and high for a while.

Broke my arm a couple years ago... not on a bike

And they gave me a couple Tylenol 3 I think. A few hours later I was lying there in bed unable to feel my arm or anything else for that matter. Sounds kind of familliar.

Best of luck on a complete and speedy recovery.

Pooping and narcotics

If you haven't already been warned or otherwise made aware, You will NOT be pooping much, if at all.
Sorry to be so graphic, but these drugs will shut your GI tract down faster than you can say : "OOWWW! My Colon!"
..And then it will be like passing a piece of Leggo.
Eat plenty of fiber and drink HUGE amounts of water.
Trust me on this one.
(Remember, Elvis died on the throne, with an impacted colon from years of Narcotic abuse)
I never cared much for Morphine, but then I am allergic to it.
Percocet is divine for pain, but beware her siren song.
Try to use the minimal amount to get by...
You want to keep pain at bay, not "chase " it.
Addiction is a very real concern.
Good luck!
Knee surgery is a bitch!
(I sure do paint a pretty picture, don't I??)

That's 100% lies. Give it a couple months of regular use, pain included, and your body still gets used to it - physically addicted. I think plenty of research has been done and I, as well as others here, have been through it.

Mine was for a neck injury - had to stop riding my mx bike. it sucked, but I played a lot of xbox and slept which was nice.

Gravity if VERY effective and universal.....
Sorry 'bout the "agony of defeat" crash.

Be very careful with the meds, not more than you need (not want)...
Percocet, Demerol and a couple others are specifically concerning-
They pound the euphoria centers/receptors of the brain (along with the pain receptors, very closely related).

Switcthing to something less probelmatic ASAP/tapering meds is a VERY good idea...

Yeah, after a week and a half with only one dump, I am fully aware. So far I have maged to cut back from 1 pill every 4 hours to 1 pill every 8 hours. Time for another glass or water.

I had the same problem last September when I got hurt at work. Not bike related, except I rode my bike to work lol. Got a chemical burn on my leg, not pretty. Hurt like crazy. Percocet didnt do much for the pain, made me feel loopy and out of wack. Vicoden didnt do anything for the pain, unless I took it with a Tylenol. Same effects when I had my wisdom teeth pulled in March.

I've noticed that the percocet is great for internal pain but doesn't seem to do much for skin graft donor site and suture area pain. Maybe it just doesn't work so well for abrasions and burns.

Three knee surgeries (two of them major, second one removed the kneecap), one major back surgery, abdominal surgery last may. I look at that bottle of percocet and one part of me loves it and the other wants to put them down the garbage disposal. Be CAREFULL.
