Now that I've had a chance to load batteries and use my returned unit, I've noticed a pretty large gap at the bottom of the battery door. Anyone else have this problem? On SPOT's Facebook page it looks like I'm not the only one that received units like this and SPOT is assuring everybody that it still meets the original water resistance specs (looks like garbage though).

Yes, mine looks the same way. I first thought I had the cover on wrong. The unit has definitely been taken apart and glued back together.

From what I was reading they also changed the black seal that goes around the battery door (makes me wonder if the original recall told the whole story). I've read about others having a sloppy glue job, where they could see where it had oozed at the seams, but mine doesn't have that problem.

If you check out the ADDENDUM that came with the refurbished unit (at least mine) the waterproof specs have been greatly reduced. From 5 meters for 1 hour to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

I don't think it matters anyway. If water gets in the unit they will give you a hassle warranty or not. Even though this is two years old I'm sure their practices haven't changed.

I think they mean that you need to pay for the SPOT service for the unit to do any good.

Got my refurbished SPOT back...it works, has the unsightly gap where the battery cover and case don't meet now. Also, my SPOT account doesn't reflect the 3-month extension promised by them. Did i miss something?

Spot II Returned

My replacement also has the gap when battery cover attached properly. Upon initial inspection and removal of battery cover, there were 4 spots where silicon globbed up -- two points required prying the cover off. I trimmed it up a bit so I get a clean seal. My renewal date also failed to reflect promised extension.

The letter that came with my updated SPOT II indicated that it could take up to 30 days to see the updated extension time online.

Talking

The letter that told me my Spot had shipped told me I would receive 1 month free service. 3 months of delay and waiting - I must be special

Looks like I made a good call just turning mine back in to REI. I"ll get a new one that hasn't been resealed.
Still waiting for new ones to show up though.
