Make sure to keep it in a waterproof bag. REI sells clear plastic heavy-duty zip-lock bags that are basically waterproof, and you can easily glue a lanyard to the bag. SPOT is waterproof enough for basic motorcycle use, but there have been reports of total failure due to salt water emersion. I would't keep it in a hard-sided waterproof case because you won't be able to press the buttons.

You know that it's not rated as an open-water PLB, right?

it's gonna be in some sort of ziplock type of waterproof thing, or a box if nothing else. first I gotta get the thing, then see what fits it ....
my garmin 478 will be in a box, but it'll be off most of the time as to not kill the battery(ies).

Still haven't had a chance to activate. d'oh.

Anybody notice how worthless the provided carry case is?
What a POS.

For true waterproofness, and to keep it safe, I've used a pelican hard case that I picked up at a fishing supply store in Panama. I think REI also sells them. I always (ALWAYS!!!) put my phone and etrex in it, while I've kept my PLB in a waterproof bag.

Thanks to this thread, I learned more about why I was keeping my GPS dry. I was doing it out of habit, because from experience, salt water fucks things up. When I first read that my GPS, and SPOT, and PLB were waterproof down to three feet, I was impressed. Now... not so impressed. It's an easy problem to fix, though- just put the expensive shit into cheap waterproof bags or cases, right?

At least there is a case. SPOT 1 didn't have one. I like the case. put a better carabiner on it. Usually only in the breast pocket of my jacket, but with the arm/leg strap, could strap it on too. Better than finding something it will fit in.

SPOT Question

I am looking at buying a SPOT and was wondering how many different models there are out there? Have they changed the GPS capabilities over the years, or have they improved it at all since its inception?

Here's the SPOT discussion thread.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=282391

There are 2 versions that I know of and 1 SPOT with GPS coming available.

Here's the SPOT site.

I just activated my SPOT 2 tonight.

I was going to ask why, but I now I see you are kayaking. Yeah, I'd probably keep it in a box for that too.

I was following the 1200 mile around florida race called the UFC (ultimate florida challenge) and one guy went thru 3 gps units. I just can't afford that!

Since the last number of posts have mentioned putting electronics in waterproof bags, I have a little tip.

Put one of those disposable silica gel desiccant packs in the bag/box to absorb any moisture that may get sealed in.

They last forever and can be "recharged" by putting them in an oven on low heat to dissipate any moisture they've absorbed.

Rather than throw them away, I collect em up at my retail job and give em away at my kayak clinics.

Good luck and have fun, Mark H.

Great idea! Thanks!!! I've had a few small problems with my Nikon D40 on rainy days, and on days going from cold-outside to warm-inside. This should help!

(It's for tidbits like this that I like this thread!)
