1980 XL125S no spark

I found this sad little bike at a recycling center near my town. No wheels, tank, or seat. unfortunately, it may become a donor motor as much as I hate to do that to an old Honda. It had just been dropped off and the guys who dropped it off apparently had the wheels for it. They were driving away as I pulled in. Damn the luck. Don't know why they would keep parts, but they said it was running. It has no spark and someone's started hacking at the wiring. They had one of the black with white strip wires coming from the CDI to the ground. Not the wire that goes to the coil but i believe the charging system one. Did they fry it? I believe I'm getting a reading from the alternator so I know there's that, but there's also the pickup coil. Any way to check the CDI or pickup coil? Thanks for any advice. Either way it wasn't a waste for $30.

I found what may be the problem. The coil has a crack going all the way around it. Not sure how likely this is to be my issue, but I've never seen one like this before. I checked it with a DMM and found the resistance to be over 9kohm. I can't remember what they typically are at, but I'm pretty sure that's not right. I took the wire off to check it too.

I'm near St. Louis, Mo. So not too near you. What would you want for your coil?

No suggestions? I don't want to spend money on it without double checking somehow first.

No one knows of any way to check the CDI or any of these electrical parts? Or what resistance this coil should show?

while i have books that will give you a number for them..you cant rely on them testing as good or bad....a part that tests good without a load could be bad under load...or may be intermitently bad....i hate to say it but you have to bite the bullet and just start swappin parts

as for my coil its cracked in half sooooo

That's what I was afraid of. My coil is cracked all the way around it. Does that necessarily mean its bad? Would a 1977 XL75 coil work? Seems like it might be CDI but I can't remember.

if its cdi yes.....heck you could look up the part#'s thru and honda parts site to verify

and no a cracked coil doesnt mean its bad..but it likely wont last long like that if exposed to the riding elements

dont quote me..but...i think any of the xl/xr 79-81 bikes "should" use the same coils....it wouldnt suprise me if its the same coil on the later 200's is the same as well

I worry about the CDI requiring different voltages between different bikes. The coil too. If they were similar year I would just chance it, but theres a 3 year difference. My XL75 runs perfect and I don't want to fry anything trying to start a parts bike.

really tough call....i wish there was a reverse parts referance by part#..it would make alot of this stuff easier....

Turns put the xl75 isn't CDI. Thought it was because I've never had to deal with the points on it. Oh well. I'll figure something out or just wait for a cheap coil and CDI. At least I can check and see what's up with the compression. Maybe I'll get lucky and the valves are out of adjustment.
